Hi there Tshilo12. Don't worry about the inconsistencies of stubs - most stubs start out as small articles, work out in the end and then become really good articles - but certainly do not worry about not bolding articles - sometimes these articles look nice with a bit of bolding and sometimes it disrupts the flow of the article to almost feel as if I'm bolding the wrong thing - but this is certainly useful. And, as you will realize, bolding anything in articles such as those to Mangarevan language at the moment, would seem to disrupt things. I'll see what I can do, but otherwise they're currently looking fine. Best of luck in continuing to edit these articles. Bobo192 09:07, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

May I inquire why you removed the synagogue link from the Eau Claire page (and from the La Crosse page too I see)? I was surprised to see it show up there, but not particularly disturbed by it, but I'm curious why you saw fit to delete it without a word on the talk page as to why...in fact, you didn't even bother to comment on your deletion. What I find to be the strangest about your deletion is that the person who put it there, 4.158.171.24, apparently went around much of the midwest putting links to various synagogues in medium-sized cities...yet the only ones you saw fit to delete were the ones in Eau Claire and La Crosse. I admit, I'm not entirely impartial...as the webmaster, I'm wondering if you found something about the site particularly objectionable? TShilo12 09:01, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
You wrote: hahaha. this is bordering on the absurd. I have ended a number of my articles and stubs with Oceania-geo-stub, and someone has changed them to just plain stubs, so now I make it just a stub, and someone comes in behind me and changes it first to a geo-stub and then to an Oceania-geo-stub. Make up your minds ppl!
Nuthin' to do with me - and anyone involved in the Stub sorting project should know to leave it as a oceania-geo-stub. Which articles do you mean? Perhaps I can get to the bottom of this sillyness...

Hello,
I'm sorry, but I'm not an expert about the Marquesas Islands ; I just found this photo on the German Wikipedia and put it to the English one and French one.
If I have got time, I'll try to expand the article, but I don't know much about this subject ; maybe I'm French, but I never went there !

The article has been moved, but please make sure to fix all the re-directs; there are dozens. Jayjg (talk) 05:14, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I came across this page, which you recently created to be a redirect to Zarphatic (which doesn't exist). I wanted to let you know that criterion number one for speedy deletion of redirects is "They refer to non-existent pages." In your edit summary you wrote that you were working on Zarphatic so I won't delete the redirect yet. Please, however, post what you have so far at Zarphatic or soon someone else will come along and delete it. — Knowledge Seeker দ 05:41, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick response! Yes, it's all part of the job. I think the reason they are deleted is because basically it's an article that has no information—if someone were to come to it all they would get would be a broken redirect. But rules are not meant to be unreasonable, and I saw that you were working on the target article. In fact, you just reminded me that I should put up redirects to the Bengali grammar article I've been working on, now that it has some content. In any case, I look forward to seeing your Zarphatic grow! — Knowledge Seeker দ 05:56, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the compliments, but of course the comparison is hardly fair. Not only is Bengali not extinct, but it has the fourth most native speakers. On top of that, I have a decent understanding of it as it is the language of my culture, although it is not my native language. That combination (decent speaker, but non-native) actually puts me in a good position to write about it. In any case, good job again, and happy editing! — Knowledge Seeker দ 06:29, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Good question, and I have no idea what a definition would be, but it probably wouldn't include someone who blanks people's user or talk pages and replaces them with abuse like this [1], which is what KS and I were talking about. ;-) SlimVirgin 06:40, Mar 28, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, i saw your message earlier but it took me a while to figure out how to reply to it. i'm relatively new to wikipedia as you might tell, and i'm sorry for overlooking some basic courtesy. i also apologize for making a rash and irrational decision to move the page "Chinese courtesy name" to "Chinese style name". In my opinion, it is not to say which one is more official. But a search under Google returns 836 results for "courtesy" and only 108 for "style". So i guess i'll shift it back?

Hi, Tomer, thanks for contacting me. Unfortunately, I'm going to be of very little help—I am not familiar with the Bhili language. I am impressed, though, with what you guys have done with it in such a short time—this is what makes Wikipedia great. The vowel signs look fine to me now, but as I don't know the correct spelling I cannot advise you on i versus ī. Unfortunately, English is my native language, I am pretty good at Spanish, and I know a good deal of Bengali; but I only know a bit of Hindi and no Gujarati and therefore am not active on either of those Wikipedias. I'm sorry to say that the Hindi article you cited does not exist; the parenthetical text is the equivalent of our MediaWiki:Noarticletext (for instance, see hi:Tomer, which is obviously not an article). I'll post something that the India noticeboard to see if anyone can help. Thanks for your good work! — Knowledge Seeker দ 08:07, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hello Tomer, thanks for the Aryan information in the talk page of Phoenicia. Since you know a lot about the word origins of the name of countries, I was wondering do you know what the word Egypt means. I've heard one time that the Arabic word for Egypt (Misr مصر), is actually Greek for "The Land of the Coptics." So, what do you think? Best regards, Gramaic 18:50, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi, Tomer, thanks for contacting me. I'll take a look and see if I can add anything. I haven't looked closely enough yet to comment on the specific issues. Also, if I might make a suggestion: while it is important to be assertive, I think a couple of your comments (such as "Dum dam dumb domm dim, how many ways can you spell 'moronic'?") might have been a bit over the top (and it does sound a bit like Tom Bombadil, I have to admit). In my experience, taking such strong stands and threatening to discredit Wikipedia does not help to make others more amenable to one's suggestions. Oh, by the way, I don't believe there is any word "Hindian" (nor is there an "Indian" language). However, since my native language is English, it is safe to assume that regardless of what you were referring to, you are correct. Don't mean to sound preachy, and I'll get back to you on the number of speakers business. — Knowledge Seeker দ 21:19, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi. I believe Diao jin jiao was a term used by Chinese Jews for themselves, not necessarily used by mainstream Chinese in reference to them. As for Youtai--is this certainly a term used by Chinese Jews for themselves, or used by others in reference to them? It's the only term widely used in Chinese today and carries, from what I know, no particularly implication. Thus...perhaps we can clarify on the Jews in China and Kaifeng Jews pages--which, by the way, ought to be coordinated and consistent. Thanks! ~ Dpr 06:12, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi Tomer. It sounds familiar because it is another example of the same phenomenon; a Christian pastor converts to Judaism, but can't quite let go of Jesus, and eventually starts his own "modern" Nazarene micro-sect. As with the other movements, these tiny groups like to get on Wikipedia and advertise, but they are essentially unverifiable. This one has been promoting the group in Messianic Judaism and Qaryanism as well. For a previous manifestation of the phenomenon, see Talmidaism. As you can imagine, I've been quite busy this week, and haven't had much time on Wikipedia. Frankly, when this new editor was done I planned to clean up all these messes, which would probably involved some VfDs, but feel free to take the bull by the horns. Regarding your project, I'll try to take a look at it today if possible. Jayjg (talk) 22:51, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Since you were asking, I will provide an answer.
I was simply wondering, whether the "Star of David" might have acquired any meaning beyond mere ornament already in late antiquity. The way the symbol was used in the synagogue of Kafarnaum (Qfar-Nachum) seemed to support this possibility to me (NOT just on the floor but in a prominent position at the facade), but it is 20 years ago that I was "gallivanting" through Israel and I could not find any photographs displaying this detail. And since I am no expert anyway, I decided to invite other users to give some comments on the issue, either supporting or objecting - isn't this the purpose of discussion pages?
Now, why was I mentioning that I was myself in Kafarnaum (Qfar-Nachum) ? Not in search for "kudos". In my view, it is a serious problem with Wikipedia that authors/contributors usually do not give sources or references for their stuff. People just claim something, and the rest of the world has to believe it. So I decided to state explicitly where the information about this particular occurence of this symbol/ornament comes from. Obviously my politics are pretty distant from most people who are usually working on Israeli topics. I'm a diaspora Jew, and proud to be. I am not a Zionist in any sense beyond believing in Israel's having the same right to exist as any other state, and the Jews having the same right to live in that land as anyone else. (In the 1940s, this would have made me clearly a Zionist. In the present geopolitical circumstances, many would define this as an anti-Zionist position.) Most of my work on Jewish topics is either about diaspora Jews or about matters so ancient as to precede the diaspora; I'm also a modest participant in topics related to Arab-Israeli conflicts, usually with the specific role of trying to mediate the inevitable conflicts over articles about conflicts.
Usually I leave the mainstream Israeli topics alone, focusing precisely on adding short articles in areas that would otherwise be completely ignored. In this case, IZAK specifically asked me to comment, and then the response to my comments was basically dismissive. Should I be pleased? I think not. It's one thing when I walk in a door and am effectively told I'm not welcome. It's another thing when someone invites me in to tell me I'm not welcome. -- Jmabel | Talk 21:48, May 6, 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I'm the one who cleaned up the article, removing the more obvious fluff and hero-worship, and adding all those links; I mostly added the links because that immense and ubiquitous "The Most Highly Reverend Cantor Hazzan Lawrence Eliezer Kepecs presenting a unique and beautiful mezuza to His Most Pontifical Holiness Pope John Paul II during an earth shattering and unprecedented meeting with 190 Jewish people Rabbis, Cantors, and leaders" picture needed some sort of balance. I'm on the fence as to whether or not he's notable; at least he's been noticed in a few real publications. Jayjg (talk) 16:50, 5 May 2005 (UTC)

I hope you haven't lost patience with my impositions on your generosity and wisdom, but can you respond to Rangerdude and Gene Nygaard here [10]
My view is, if people want to stop paying attention to this proposal and let it go as it were inactive, I can't object. But when I first formulated this proposal, I looked at the Wikipedia think tank to see how to do it. The think tank lists proposals in alphabetical order. Some date to 2004, some even to 2003. They haven't been deleted or "closed," they are just there, inactive, part of the reservoir of ideas at Wikipedia.
I am content for my proposal, now also included in the "think tank" proposals, to rest their untouched until the coming of the messiah (oops!). But I do think that if anyone -- even five years form now -- is interested in the idea, they have a right to look at it. ANd if over the next few weeks or months people want to check it out and check in they should.
Frankly, I see Gene Nygaard and Rangerdud's "proposal" to be just another way to make it disappear. That's not right and I did explain my reasoning but for obvious reasons I shouldn't respond to them any more ...
Thanks, Slrubenstein | Talk 15:31, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

I don't think there's any substantive difference between ɚ, ɝ, and r̩. From the phonetic point of view they'd all be formed basically identically. It's more a matter of convention to use ɚ in unstressed syllables and ɝ in stressed syllables and keep r as a symbol for nonsyllabic use. But not everyone follows this convention; in his Phonology of English, Michael Hammond uses r̩ for stressed and unstressed syllables. (Other people use ɜr, especially in broad or phonemic transcription, to keep symbols to a minimum and because there's evidence from language games that rhotic speakers consider turn (for example) to have four phonemes: most fluent backward talkers say [nrʌt] for turn, not [nɝt], though it's difficult to know whether the spelling is having an influence.) As for ʌɪ vs. aɪ, I think it's fairly common to have different qualities in whiter and wider, but I've never heard of differentiating hide (n.) and hide (v.) this way. Do you do that? -- Angr/ comhrá 18:11, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

You're probably right. It's pretty low quality stuff. Jayjg (talk) 21:55, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
Since I majored in Linguistics in college, I have deep appreciation for the information on the X phonology pages. But as a perpetual student of foreign languages, I feel that a simple guide to the pronunciation of a language, accessible by non-linguists, is ultimately more helpful to the majority of researchers accessing Wikipedia. I would prefer cross-linking between the articles.
I suppose I wouldn’t have a problem conjoining the pronunciation information with the phonology information. I do have two concerns however: The first is the possibility of someone hitting the page, looking for phonological information and seeing a pronunciation guide, or vise-versa, and moving on thinking it didn’t cover what they were looking for because what they wanted was lower on the page; the second being the inherent redundancy of the information. It is possible that both concerns may well be solved with clever sectioning and TOC.
I will certainly acquiesce to the consensus of the community. If we should combine the pages, do you have a sense which should come first in the article? From an encyclopedic standpoint, we might want to start with the technical aspect and then break it down. On the other hand, from a resource standpoint, we might want to start with the more usable form then move to the technical description.
As for Hmong, we have a very large population here in Minnesota. The more I saw signs and documents written in Hmong, the more curious I became in the language. Plus the fact that the way Hmong is pronounced is so different from what the written word would imply, I finally just decided to spend the time to acquire at least a cursory understanding of the language. Not quite; "assessible" was what I found originally, and "accessible" was what I created to fix the problem. When I found the "assessible" category, my first thought was "They're public services! Their finances have to be assessed regularly, don't they?" But the person who created that actually meant "special services for people with disabilities", so "accessible" is what it should have been.

Your last edit of Jewish services is pretty poor. The version just before that is much clearer and to the point. The version as you have it now rambles on and on, and the reader will get lost in all the politness and superflous words. 67.172.17.210 03:37, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, in retrospect, "/r/" would have been better. I'll go ahead and change that back. Thanks for pointing out my mistake! -- Whimemsz 19:17, May 24, 2005 (UTC)

Good thing I have admin powers and can actually delete stuff...*grin* Bearcat 17:11, 29 May 2005 (UTC)
