Very Pink! I logged in this user name again and saw your comments on the associated user page. I appreciate your welcome and recognition that I could be useful here. Curiously, I had just visited this page about the poor quality of pages when randomly tested when I returned to find your comments. There are specific reasons I reviewed pages, leaving critical comments but not editing pages. One reason is articulated in the artice you linked in your comments, which referred to the addictive nature of editing here.
Addiction is defined by harmful nature of a repetitive behavior. If it's not harmful, it's not addiction, at least according to professional societies of addiction specialists. I'm not interested in hurting myself to provide free information that is already free anyway. Very little of what is on wikipedia can not be found elsewhere on the Web. It's interesting to see it all in one namespace, but I wonder who benefits -- readers or those who enjoy the rewards of adding more information. Looking at the slipshod work evident when one flips between random pages, writers seem to be adding information largely for the thrill of it. I fear some might only add information until they have enough edits to gain admin status, and then they turn their attention to more rewarding obsessions, such as fighting the vandals that walk through the unlocked door 24/7. To me, this appears like the war on terror or the war on drugs as an open-ended conflict with no real effort to find a solution for the problem at hand.
That is the other reason I might leave notes critiquing articls but am unlikely to do much editing. I don't want to fight about it. It's not so much the rank and file editors as those who have some knowledge of the system and the power to prevent me from responding after they characterize me in a negative light. I got away with critiquing a few articles, somewhat to my suprise, but I sincerly doubt I could begin to criticise administrative actions without one of the 900 deciding to block my user account. Sure, maybe I could then turn around and ask for mercy from another similarly empowered sysop, but that would aggravate the addictive nature of the endeavor, specifically the harmful aspect of the addition. I would be wasting time in pursuit of more of the addictive agent. It would mean I'm not editing, but wasting my time begging somebody who might not have any academic or social skills outside of this somewhat odd context for permission to play in a context where the primary purpose, as far as I can tell, is to add information for the fun of it.
Already I'm spending time responding at length when I had better uses for my time, like looking at today's newborn foal -- maybe the pink caught my eye, but here I am. Tommorrow it will be a two-day foal, the wet of the womb dried from its hair, and the wobble of a newborn no longer evident in its stance. No matter how unique this project, a look at that foal today is worth more than this could ever be. I was harmed just loggin into this site because it distracted me from what is real. I will never have another chance to have see that foal as one day old horse. This encyclopedia is not the least neutral in it's point of view -- it presents the idea that viewing this encyclopedia is better than viewing anything else. I am harmed in the process. If I am going to donate intellectual and editorial skills to a charity, I would prefer to find a charity that won't waste my donation. I see a lot of wasted effort here, and don't find much of value to justify the wastage. Thanks again for your welcome message, but now I need to avert my eyes toward things more beautiful, more real and more reflective of the integrity that is our universe. I am sorry for adding comments to votes (something only allowed exceptionally, not for expressing opinion/for discussion). The matrix article is very short!, and whatever it is, it is (IMO) not a "hoax", because it is valid usage of language. The editor(s) should have tried to add data/parse the sentences mechanically (as i did), i have done this for others articles, see End-user computing, which is related to artificial intelligence. I do not really know the details, but it was very abstract language. I have experienced removal of edit templates quite often, i.e. Red_hair, passages were edited overnight, and templates vanished. I am new to Afd, but now i have learned how to list articles, and not try to discuss within the vote list, and not to vote myself. Akidd dublin• tl• ctr-l 08:06, 8 May 2006 (UTC) reply

Hello Kylu! Thank you very much for the warm welcome, it was most unexpected, but very much appreciated. Be warned however that you've opened yourself up to being my "goto" person for all my wikipedia questions! Kidding of course ;)-- Jbobbylopez 07:35, 7 May 2006 (UTC) reply

Thanks for the warm welcome, it was totally unexpected and made me feel right at home as a Wikipedian. About the 'sneaking' of you as a character, the answer is 'why of course I can !' Hey - thanks for the welcome note the other day! I used to study HIV (a retrovirus, hence my alias - good catch), but now I work on HPV (very much not a retrovirus). I've lurked the Wikipedia for a while now, but I was inspired to join when I noticed the human papillomavirus entry could use some help, IMHO. Is it appropriate for me to erase and entirely re-write several whole paragraphs the HPV entry? If so, am I supposed to use the etiquette of posting the old text in the "discussion" window for people to more easily retrieve it? Retroid 20:04, 10 May 2006 (UTC) reply
Hiya! I am interested in helping with the transwiki system and noticed your {{ transwiki}} and {{ transwiki2}} templates. I've not yet started doing any transwiki work and would like to know if you'd like some help testing, specifically from a newbie user standpoint? I've got brand new accounts on meta and wiktionary for the purpose of transwikification and would be happy to help. ~Kylu ( u| t) 20:18, 11 May 2006 (UTC) reply

Eh, I didn't vandalize any page with that account. I made a polite, reasoned statement on two talk pages. These statements contained no misinformation, blanking, or other abuse, nor did these statements contain any spam or other policy violations. -- Ah, Whatever 08:34, 13 May 2006 (UTC) reply

Hello -- You left a welcome message on my recently created account the other day, which I removed because I don't really like template welcome messages. Even if they are highly personalised in form, they're still rather impersonal in content. But don't be dismayed - you are always welcome to leave a comment if you have something more specific to say, for example in reference to something on my userpage. You seem to enjoy creativity, especially music, so here's a link to some of mine. Zerrakhi 07:49, 14 May 2006 (UTC) reply
right. i read somehere on the net, the sum of all internet terminals, mainframes etc. is called "the matirx" (in hacker terms). it should be on the disambiguation page- not into an article on its own. together with the information about "software matrix"- one line will do. if verification possible. there is not really a need to make articles out of such information. by the way i have relocated to Yy-bo. Hey all! Wikibreak's over (though I'm just putting up some replies at the moment) and I've noticed that my talk page is getting to be a teensy bit on the gargantuan side here.
Here's the plan:
Seriously though, I think I'm going to change a few things:
Please feel free to comment on this if you'd like, however please note that I plan on archiving this page in the next few days. The page is getting a little overburdened. I'm a bit odd in that I keep my archive pages on watch. In English, this means that you could potentially continue a conversation there, though I imagine it'd work just as well if we continued it here.

Thank you, Kylu, for voting in my RFA. It closed with a final result of 75/1/0. Now that I am an administrator here, I will continue to improve this encyclopedia, using my new tools to revert vandalism, block persistent vandals, protect pages that have been vandalized intensively, and close AFD discussions. Any questions? Please contact me by adding a new section on my talk page. Again, thanks to all of you who participated!!! -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 23:10, 20 May 2006 (UTC) reply |
