Thanks for helping edit the Religion in X counties; however, though the CIA World Fact Book looks definitive, it suffers from a few problems

• it is a tertiary source relying on sources that it usually does not cite. For instance for Hungary is states "2011 est." but does not say who estimated.
• it sometimes is flat out wrong and contradicts other more reliable sources. See Talk:Religion in Sweden for an example

Many of us who work on the religion in X articles, and we hope you will join us, prefer using other sources if possible. We often have to balance reliability against recentness against detail (e.g., how much lumping together of diverse denominations such as Catholics and Protestants into an overall Christian group). Some guidelines are

• Census data is usually preferred but doesn't always exist or may not be that recent (for instance in Religion in Chad the most recent census data is 1993). In a few cases the census is botched (e.g., 2012 Chile census)
• Another possible source is state registration of religious affiliation such as in Germany or Norway though that has its biases (in Germany some people have opted out because they don't want their tax money given to the church though they are still going to church; in Norway the default for many years was Church of Norway and one had to explicitly opt out).
• Next would be large research surveys (for instance Pew Landscape surveys for the US).
• Next smaller research surveys (but being aware that less detail is possible and less accuracy).
• Finally tertiary sources like the CIA World Factbook.
