RVW 9
Well, as someone who was at the 1st performance of RVW's 9th symphony - and was there again in the Royal Festival Hall last summer to hear it performed as part of the composer's 50th anniversary - I am delighted to see anyone helping to get this great and inspiring work taken seriously. (Imho no other country would treat one of its - and arguably one of the 20th century's - greatest composers in such a cavalier way). So please accept a welcome message from me :)

Thank you for pointing that out for me and for checking the wikified places on the rescue list box. I have tried to make sure the list link to the correct places but it is so easy to miss the odd one and find that the place name you want to link to is the wrong location. One anomaly that I do find rather frustrating on wikipedia is that often when you link a town in the UK, our American cousins seem to place there town or city ahead of the UK one. I.E. If you wikify Boston it links to Boston in the USA and if you want a link to Boston in the UK you have to link via Boston, Lincolnshire. Personally I think the original should just have the word Boston as its title and all others to which are named after them should be prefixed I.E. Boston, Massachusetts as a homage to its origins, but perhaps I’m being old fashioned. stavros1 ♣ 13:41, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
I see you created the various articles on lifeboats stationed at Cromer. There is a discussion
here in which it is suggested that they are not notable enough individually to warrant individual articles. It has also been suggested that they be merged into one article. Your thoughts and input into the discussion would be appreciated.

Sorry I didn't check my talk page sooner. Usually COI's are fairly straightforward; if you see a user say that they are a friend, coworker, significant other, or are the person, and are editing in an extremely biassed fashion, whacking a COI warning template on their talk page usually won't hurt. That's what the other editor appears to have done in this case. Anyway, let me know if you need any more advice - I'll do my best to get there in time next time around.
SMC (

Well, unfortunately the COI warn template is a single-level template. As a result there's no "stage one" as there is for vandalism (ie. assuming good faith "vandalism" in the form of test edits). To avoid overwhelming the user with a full-length welcome and COI (they're unlikely to read both) you could use a shortened version of the welcome note - {{subst:w-short}}. There appears to be welcome templates for NPOV and spam editors, but nothing for COI's.

Darned if I know! There was a suggestion somewhere to do this - merge the Leeds page into the Leeds Mission one. Maybe someone used an admin tool to remove it, or perhaps the old version of the page contained it and got deleted. I've got a feeling there was a PROD on it that I can't find now. That would be where the suggestion would have been made. An embarrassing one, too. As it doesn't apply now, you can bin my comment.

If you look at the history of the poster who originally posted the offending material IP 212 etc, you will see that user has a history of vandalism and IP bans. I am asking that the local NYORKS editors do not simply revert in a trigger happy way and compound the problem. If you examine the talk pages of the local editors I do not think this is an unwarranted assumption. Regarding the complaint, a complaint has been filed with an editor directly, I find this more productive than listing it on a public page and feeding the trolls.

Pretty much; if the article's a hoax or blatantly non-notable, no reason to bother waiting a couple more days when it can be deleted on sight. Some admins might disagree, but i don't see a problem with it.

The Harrisburg city was template was created on the 25th and was initally very cluttered and included articles like Strawberry Square
[1]. I had decided to revamp it to make it more like other city navigation templates (like {{Erie, PA}} or {{Allentown, PA}}). Afterwards the template was still on a bunch of pages in which the page wasn't linked in the navigation template (haven't got clue to where this came up, but some other people don't think pages should have a navigation template if the page is not in it).
Now if you feel that Strawberry Square is an important enough topic for the City of Harrisburg, by all means, add it back to the template and add the template back to the article. I just chose what I thought (as an out-of-towner) was the most important topics to Harrisburg. --

PS seriously, it's a very good edit, and I do hope that a consensus can peacefully be reached. I'm very much in favour of not trying to summarize things too much in a couple of words when they've clearly taken a lot longer than that for historians to understand! Cheers.
Thank you for the amusing message. I had a brief sense of panic when I saw the edit summary and I realized I did not actually research whether furble was a real word! (There are actually two ACW articles in which I was unsuccessful in turning back the decisive adjective, so I had to use a footnote for each to explain what the word actually meant in the context of that battle. Messy. I really do not want that to happen to Gettysburg.)

After the surge of new articles in June, July has been a quieter month with just one new featured article,
Chelsea Bridge (well done again
Iridescent), and one new good article,
Charles Pearson. We therefore, currently have 10 Featured Articles, 1 Featured List and 10 Good Articles although two of thse are under reassessment. Unfortunately, one former Good Article,
Docklands Light Railway was demoted to B-class in July and in early August this was followed by
Jean Charles de Menezes. We have 90 B-class articles and it would nice to see some of those improved as suggested before.
However, overall assessment of articles appears to have dropped with 43% of articles now unasssessed for quality. Also, 35% of articles have no assessment or importance rating at all. This is quite an increase whereas it was only 1/4 at the start of the year.
On the Portal, the only active areas seem to be the voting and changing of the selected pictures and articles. The transport news seems to be infrequently updated with the most up-to-date news being in this newsletter!
As usual all suggestions to improving the Metropolitan are welcome so if you have one we would be happy to hear from you.

Hello and Happy New Year from me and generally the London Transport project.
Thank you to Arriva436 for the February gallery update
If you think there is anything else i have missed, please
drop me a note or leave a message at

Again i would like to state this newsletter is looking for anyone willing to do an issue.
Upminster Bridge tube station was promoted to
good article status in early February. Well done to all those involved. This is apparently the first tube station to be accepted as a Good Article.
All articles have been assessed of their quality with only some of the articles' importance to the project yet to be determined. Well done on the assessment.
Discussion arose over the addition or removal of succession boxes showing the present London Underground lines and their histories as well as former services. Another discussion arose on boxes showing stations layouts
Separate issues arose over the population of aboandoned London Undeground projects categories and categories on single station platforms
New guidelines have been proposed for railway accidents. Please see
WP:RAILCRASH.
...that
Belsize Park station is one of the only eight stations in London to have a deep level bomb shelter beneath it?
…that
Mile End tube station is the only station on the London Underground network from which it is possible to reach any other station with only a single change of train?

Hi. I am the guy who's edits to reveille you deleted. I have to point out a lie you added to your message: you said the page

Hi and thanks very much for the message.
Please see the note on your Talk page concerning the word "lie", and the Wikipedia policies
WP:AGF and
WP:CIVIL.
I am not sure in what way the wording, "The Rouse, a bugle call commonly mistaken for "Reveille", although these are actually two different tunes." is unclear. The article does seem perfectly clear to me. Misreading an article is not the same as being drawn to a false conclusion by its bad structure or content.
There's no evidence of the "many other people" who were "misled" by this. You are the first to raise this concern.

Good question, and a nice solve I hope! Not being a native of said area (been a couple of times, nice views and architecture), I came at this from developing the article on
George Croydon Marks, and noticed the two rather large gaps we had; so hence the investigation/creation.
This pdf from Redcar & Cleveland councils archive confirms it as "the owners of Middlesbrough estate" (page 39, section 4.15). It also highlights how awful our current Saltburn article is, and what a great source of detail this conservation area plan would be. I looked around Wikipedia and Google for sources for Middlesborough estate over the weekend, but could find much - a books job I guess, unless you know better? Hope this helps, happy to discuss further. Rgds, --

Hi. You are right, these are alternate spellings of the same place. I'm quite confident that "Olkiombo" is the official spelling. It is not uncommon to see Kenyan place names being spelt in several different ways. They are often named in tribal languages which have little history in terms of literature (in this case
Masai language)

Thanks muchly, Amalthea - I was looking at same time.
I shouldn't have called it a fix, actually, it's really just a hack. Darned non-standard welcome templates, the whole script needs a rewrite to better cope with that. Cheers, and thanks,

Well...not quite. However, recently, I did help write

Heh! Thanks, good to meet you too.

Sorry, I don't have any more info than what is given. Likely sources would be aviation magazines around the time of the accident, with any South African published magazine being the most likely to bear fruit.

A "walled garden" is where there is an article which at first glance looks like a lot of blue links and references, but when you start examining the links and the references, they are all only referring to other articles/content produced by others within that "walled garden" - with no actual recognition from third parties or to the world at large.
A self created "notability" that doesnt actually exist.

Hah! dunno really, but one of the reasons I am D, B and K - well a minor contributory factor anyway - was what happened the last time I was even remotely unserious while trying to edit in this lovely project. I ended up feeling only slightly better than if I had been revealed to be an out-and-out puppy-torturer and barbecuer-of-kittens. So now I'm trying to steer for the middle ground (er mixed metaphor alert?) and be neither one thing nor the other. To be honest, just doing less is probably a good thing, much though I love it. I have, in truth, become quite disillusioned over the years... :) Cheers,

I am a bit demoralized by the other editors insistence that idiomatic British be used over more formal English. I will neither be watching nor changing the article. I think it was "improved" by the removal of the
WP:PEACOCK stuff, but if the other editors don't think so, they may restore it. Thanks for the opportunity. I monitor about 50 schools and universities. By no means the worst one for

As for whether a multiplicity of categories is a good thing or a bad thing, probably a good thing. It increases the chances that someone will find and read the article by browsing through the category structure (the system of categories being predicated upon the notion that this is one route for readers to find related articles).
As for whether the categories themselves are appropriate, one standard point is that categories ought to be supported by material in the article, per
WP:CAT: "It should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories." Looking therefore at the list of categories for
Stefan Zweig:
Category:Young Vienna - no mention of
Young Vienna in the article, and it seems that there ought to be, so probably a sign that the article needs tweaking rather than the category removing
Category:Jewish writers – Jewish-based occupational categories tend to survive at CFD in a way that some other religion-based occupational categories don't, on the basis that Jewishness is an ethnicity as well as a religion.
Category:Austro-Hungarian writers /
Category:Austro-Hungarian Jews – no mention of his being Austro-Hungarian, as opposed to Austrian, in the article. Needs to be looked at one way or the other. I don't know enough about the politics or the person to say which description is best, or whether both are valid.
Category:People from Innere Stadt – well, he was born there, but "people from..." categories are not about birth location, but are supposed to be about defining periods of residence.
Category:Austrian refugees – probably OK, but only if Austrian exiles is removed, as Austrian exiles is a more specific subcategory
Category:Austrian exiles – probably ought to be removed, as
Category:Exiles says "This is a category of people that have been exiled by their country as a form of punishment", and it doesn't appear that he was "exiled" in this sense.

Hi,
good catch! Actually this situation confused me more than a little when I looked at the photo, and I've left a note which I hope might help in the future. (Or indeed help myself in 11 month's time when I've forgotten what my confusion even was!) Well done, cheers,

Thanks for the note. It looked like a standard IP noticed that something was "misspelled" and "corrected" it. If the rest of the article uses theatre, then I have no problem with your changes.

OK, so using a specific image on terms of advertising and navigational purposes is apparently "not accepted"? A more appropriate image used would surely be the benefit of the public and other people. Reverting some changes that have been suggested by Network Rail is fairly contradicting to one of your "favourite quotes" that "would be just fine...". My change is simply for the public as the previous images are not very clear and maybe confusing to some people (e.g. writing 'hotel' on the image caption of 'St Pancras Station' may be misunderstood by some tourists, thinking that it is a hotel, thus avoiding it). Although its clear to us, it could be an obstacle to people, domino-ing into the station, consequently, a ticket less for the rail company and Network Rail. Kindly do not change the images back. Thank You.
Thank you for the reply. There is so much here where I don't understand where you're coming from, or where I simply think that you're wrong, both in the substance of your arguments and, crucially, in your manner of presenting them, that it might just be better if we agree to differ. Best wishes

Having read through the article saved by
User:Quaestor23 I can see how it came to be deleted, as much of that information would be of more value on the BBS's webpage itself. I do still feel it's notable for being pretty much the biggest BBS in the UK in the mid 90's, though as pointed out, other than the scan from .net magazine from 1990 there's no references to that. But we can infer from that article, in the biggest Uk magazine to deal with the internet, that Mono was notable enough and rare enough to be commented on in a full page article. --

Thanks very much for that. As you can see I was involved in efforts to save the article and I would like to see it back one day. The lack of references was a real problem (though in fact we now have the .net ref, which we used not to) and the people who were so keen to delete it were not going to be swayed by inferences and the like. They wanted real proper references or it didn't happen. I can sort-of sympathize with this stance for the good of the encyclopaedia as a whole but it's a bit painful to behold when it's a topic close to you. People of a deletionist bent can sometimes look a bit fanatical, spiteful, or whatever, especially if you're on the wrong end of it. I'm not sure I agree with your view that there was something wrong with the content - it has a couple of wow-gosh bits but I felt it was mostly quite encyclopaedic. The content wasn't, of course, what really killed it though, just the lack of good references. Finally, I was very excited to hear about your session at Barcamp 8 and I've responded at

On looking through some of the BBS Lists, there are definitely some there that survive as stubs, pointing to the main site. Do you think that would be acceptable? There is also the notability that Tugs & Pie featured on a few TV shows in the mid 90's. Once again - how do we reference that?--

Totally your call if you want to keep it, but in general consideration of the user's edits — the first of which was to MFD an AFD discussion, and this edit was one of 12 in a five-minute span posting the same exact thing to different talk pages — I'm not sure how sincere it's meant. Hope you didn't mind the rollback on it, since it was — at least to me — clearly part of a disruptive spam spree.

Your "bold" replacement of the refimproveBLP tag was entirely justified: I'd intended to tag it merely refimprove and didn't notice that I'd checked the wrong box in TW. Thanks for putting it right. regards

The overall roof was 'high' in relation to its width. Most other North Eastern Railway roofs were arched (smooth / rounded) this one was eliptical (pointed). The real shame is it was initialy patched-up, so it could have been saved. Methinks this otherwise grand station to be so much the poorer without it.

I will need to modify the message to fit their drive-by but you have given me a good base to start. Again Thanks --

Still at it! I wonder if you have any advice on the recent suggestion that the screenshot was "possibly" subject to trademark. As far as I can see it demonstrates the home page, just as there is a home page of a BBS on the main BBS page. None of that content is trademarked as such, but it may be that because it's of an image that's not on the web, that somehow makes it... I dunno. Wikipedians are wierd.

Back to school
September and October are the months when many young people move from one school to a new school, or to university. It tends to be a time when freshers "look up" their new schools and colleges on Wikipedia and decide to edit for the first time. Many additions to school articles, in the past, have been unsourced, some poorly formatted and some in violation of other Wikipedia policies. More experienced editors can help here. It is easy to become frustrated, hit revert and issue a warning of some sort. How off-putting for a new editor.
New editors do make innocent mistakes and it is up to us all to try to welcome and support them; perhaps by issuing a
welcome message, helping them to find sources or format references and citations. Obviously, not all will turn out to be paragons of Wikipedia virtue, but we can at least give them the opportunity. May be it is time for us all to re-read the essay
Please do not bite the newcomers.

If you see any problems with the page display on any articles or problems with your favourite gadget or script then it may be a problem with the new release of software. It is worth checking out the

If not then raise a new thread to get it recorded and to see if there are any of the technical people that can point you at a solution. Collaboration
Each month the project has a collaboration of the month when two articles are nominated to be worked on by members during the month. One of these is usually a B-class article and one a start-class article. Some of these have not really been worked on by members and I would encourage all members to get involved and see what can be achieved. An example of the success of this effort has been
Whitby which was the B-class collaboration article in July and has just achieved
Good Article status. This was achieved by just the efforts of three editors just think what would be achieved if all of the 91 members got involved in editing these articles. They may not be ones which are of particular interest to you but they relate to
Yorkshire in some way so they raise the profile of the county and can often be related to articles you are interested in in some way or other. I have tried to rotate round the county with a variety of differing topics while steering clear of the ones designated as our priority articles. Happy Christmas
Happy Christmas to all the members of the project. Many thanks for all the hard work over the past year and hope that the good progress will be kept up in the new year. Many of the regular editors will be away over the break and vandalism tends to increase at this time of year, could be all those new computers that people get for Christmas. So if you are around then keep an eye out for vandalism to the project's articles and revert as soon as possible. All of the good work of the project can be destroyed quickly if vandalism is not spotted and dealt with.

Wow. I really apologize. I even took the time to go to several different grammar sites to make absolutely SURE I was truly remembering my editing correctly, and I kept reading over and over and over that commas and periods are NEVER outside quote marks. Ever. That's how I was taught. However, I don't profess to know how Brits do punctuation, so I happily accede to you. I've never had anyone undo my corrections before, and that's fine, truly it is. It's also not worth nit-picking about, either. Life is much too short to fight over comma placement, even if one IS bitter, disillusioned and knackered. It just looks so weird to me to see it that way. Is there someway to tell who an editor is on articles? If one clicks on an 'edit' button on a page, does the user ID appear anywhere? I will respect your pages and skip over editing anything of yours in the future, I promise. Please DO let me know if there is a means of knowing that; I spent too much time re-doing all those commas and quotes only to have them all un-done again. Thank you for your message.

New software release
We are getting near to the next release of the
MediaWiki software that runs Wikipedia, this will be version 1.19 and is expected in the second half of February. For those of you who are interested in the details of the changes then take a look at this
page on MediaWiki.org. There is usually some disruption around the time of the release so if you experience problems then check out at the
Village Pump to see if the problem has been reported. If it has not then report it so that the developers can get a view of the problem. One area of concern is the scripts used by users to perform routine tasks. It could be that if this change is included in the deployment then scripts may need to be changed to declare modules the script is dependent upon. So if your favourite script fails to work this could be the problem and will need to be fixed.

SMC (

14:31, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

September has seen an increase in the number of articles as well as October. There was only the promotion
Timeline of the London Underground to featured list status so congratulations to those involved. October so far has been eventful in other areas except for the assessment side.
On an assessment at the start of October the overall assessment showed that (and still is at the time of writing) there are 41% of articles have no assessment or importance rating at all. This seems to be getting worse compatred to to the start of the year when this figure was only at 25%.

Please see the note on your Talk page concerning the word "lie", and the Wikipedia policies

Sincere apologies for not doing an issue last month. Thi was due to being very busy but when i had the next available time it landed in the middle if the month. Therefore i decided that i would try and get this back to its original roots of being at the start of the month and so waited a couple of weeks. Again i am sorry for the wait.
I have also had to give less detail on some reports as the Article Alert Bot is currently down.
New guidelines have been proposed for railway accidents. Please see
WP:RAILCRASH.
Major discussions arose over the notability of many London bus routes, which resulted in some routes being kept and some being deleted. Please leave your comments at
WT:LT#London bus route articles and
WT:BUS. This has essentially ground to a halt.
Another discussion as well as straw poll has been on whther the frequency of trains per hour should be added. It appeared there was no consensus.
New usage data has been given by TfL for the London Underground for 2009
Finally a minor issue arose on the colour of London Overground.
Did you know...
that at 44
tons, the locomotives of the
Central London Railway's first underground trains were so heavy that they shook buildings as they passed 60 feet below and were scrapped after three years?
...that bus company

...that
Belsize Park station is one of the only eight stations in London to have a deep level bomb shelter beneath it?
…that
Mile End tube station is the only station on the London Underground network from which it is possible to reach any other station with only a single change of train?

Each line has "this is the way we" [do something, e.g. brush our hair, go to school etc] at the start, repeats the done thing twice more and ends "on a cold and frosty morning" or something similar.

:) Cheers,

OK let's have a look. Firstly, 21 is nowhere near the record - I don't know if
Winston Churchill holds the record, but he has many more than 21!

After posting the above message I checked out your user page and just had to let you know that not only did I steel (I hope you get the irony ha-ha) the tag about drive by tagging, I stole the entire section bravo I have been frustrated with drive-by taggers, not only NPOV but others, and now I have something to drive by and tag on their talk page. I will need to modify the message to fit their drive-by but you have given me a good base to start. Again Thanks --

Thanks - I am really flattered. When I saw the tag I just thought "too good not to steal" but I am most gratified that you liked the whole section. It really is a most frustrating thing, so maybe it will make people think about it - or just smile even, that would be nice! Cheers

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at

bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the

New software release
October sees the next release of the MediaWiki software (version 1.8) that runs the English Wikipedia. It will probably live by the time the newsletter arrives by the last few month's delivery dates! If you see any problems with the page display on any articles or problems with your favourite gadget or script then it may be a problem with the new release of software. It is worth checking out the
Village Pump - Technical board to see if there has been any report of a similar problem. If not then raise a new thread to get it recorded and to see if there are any of the technical people that can point you at a solution. Hopefully things will go smoother than previous releases but these things always throw up obscure problems that have not been foreseen.
If you are interested in the detail of the changes made in this release then take a look at the
full list.

If you have an article that you think could be improved in one of these collaborations then just nominate it on the project talk page and I will fit it in at some point.

Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 9,480 last month to 9,599 on January 29th). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 74 is just ahead of
WP:GM who have 67.
WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 54 out of a total number of 2,906 articles.
Currently we have twenty nine Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
WikiProject Yorkshire Collaboration of the Month Project
The February 2012 articles selected below are an editors choice ans a suggestion fron the project talk page.
The project is subscribed to a

watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR.

Noticed your user name in an edit summary and couldn't resist taking a look (only another Brit would use "knackered"). I seem to be bumping into a few of us long-timers recently; I got here two months after you did.
