Pink Frost Intrigue

I'm intrigued, owning 3 copies of the original single, seeing the original band a number of times, meeting most of the major players in flying nun including Martin Phillips, and so on....Are you saying you played drums over Martyn Bull's original contributions? Or that Martyn Bull didn't play on it? Or that it wasn't recorded in Dunedin 1982 with 'extra noises recorded in 1984'? Or that your contributions were the extra noises???? Please tell. I own almost every early flying nun record and consider it one of the five or so finest moments. Franciselliott ( talk) 15:20, 8 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Answer

OK, this is the truth about The Chills session, as far as I can say, without written confirmation from Danny Hyde:

I was good friends with Alex Burak, who was the chief engineer at The Point Studio (see Andrew Edge) at 9 (? I think so) Eccleston Street, Victoria, London, from 1982 on. Rupert Merton owned the studio, who was also the publisher for the Thompson Twins, with whom I had played for a short time. Danny Hyde was the assistant engineer at The Point, and asked me to come down to the studio to "help out" some band he was working with. (I'm not sure if it was a paid job, because Danny was allowed free time as part of his low wage.) I recently asked Alex Burak about this, per e-mail, and he said it was a Danny Hyde session.

I think it was wintertime, or cold, because I remember looking over at (I wasn't really introduced, it was just a sort of Hi, I'm Martin etc.,) Phillips and someone else (sorry to forget) who were both wearing plaid-type overcoats, which were popular in London at the time. (The studio heating wasn't the best, as it was basically a barn attached to the back of Merton's offices: Latitude 51°29'39.10"N - Longitude 0° 8'52.83"W ) They both seemed quite shy, but friendly, BTW.

I played my silver Premier drum kit, but this is where it gets vague, because I definitely remember Martin with a guitar, but maybe he was just showing me the structure of the song (which was a bit different from other pop-rock stuff at the time). Anyway, I played about 5 or 6 takes of the song, with headphones on, of course, to listen to the track, and they accepted the last one. I don’t remember any vocals on it, which made me think it was an instrumental, and made it harder to know where I was in the structure. To be honest, I can't remember if I was paid, but if I was it must have been a "buy you a beer" kind of thing.

When I found The Chills' "Pink Frost" video on YouTube recently I was shocked, because I spotted my own drumming straightaway. I was very fond of The Police and Punk-pop drummers back then, so the rolling '16' fills on the toms and offbeat reggae-type cymbal crashes were something I used to do, as well as the pounding bass drum, which was always popular; bands not having very big PAs back then.

As a laugh, I can tell you that there are one or two points where I missed a cymbal but didn’t say anything, as I only wanted them to say "Yes, that'll do", and get out of that dingy cold room. I can look at the video and tell you exactly where, if you want :) Another point is that I was a bit bored in the solo (or the long thingy near the end, in my opinion) which I thought was too long, so I switched to ride cymbal halfway through. I still remember thinking that, believe it or not.

Maybe the basic tracks were recorded in Dunedin and more were added in London, but I must be the "extra noises" (crash, bang, wallop, thud) that they recorded in London. Not being credited on the single is sad, but that happened a lot back then. (I once recorded a track for Julian Cope, and his management took a whole year to pay me :)

A New Zealander called Craig (tall, blond) later worked as the road manager with a band I was in, Savage Progress, and he worked with Flying Nun Records for awhile while he was/still is? living in London. He might be able to confirm this, as he was around at the time, although not at the session. I remember him taking me to a few pub gigs with New Zealand bands in 1984. I apologise to Craig for forgetting his second name.

That’s all I can say. :)-- andreasegde ( talk) 16:01, 8 August 2008 (UTC) reply

P.S., I have thought more about this, and I remember asking why they didn't have a drummer (you ask these sorts of questions just to create small talk) and I think they said something about a Visa, or the lack of one :) I could be wrong, because maybe Martyn was ill, but that's what I remember.-- andreasegde ( talk) 20:12, 8 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Curiouser and Curiouser

As you know, wikipedia is made of verifiable statements. Since I have 3 verifiable lists of Bull as the drummer (single, kaleidoscope world and the rip it up interview), I am on the case for an alternative point of view. Roger Shepherd first point of call. I'll get back later. Franciselliott ( talk) 09:20, 9 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Fine by me. -- andreasegde ( talk) 11:21, 9 August 2008 (UTC) reply
If I run into Martin Phillipps around town in the next week or so I'll ask him about it too. Or Roy Colbert, for that matter, since he'd probably have a fair idea. Personally I believe AE, but verifiability is a Good Thing. Grutness... wha? 21:06, 9 August 2008 (UTC) reply

As it was so long ago I am not interested in upsetting the apple cart, or showing any disrespect to Martyn Bull, but it would be nice to have an old memory of mine confirmed at last. :)-- andreasegde ( talk) 21:15, 9 August 2008 (UTC) reply

BTW, Craig would be Craig Taylor, no? Grutness... wha? 00:39, 10 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Ah-ha! Got it in one Grutness!! Good grief, I couldn't get it (maybe it was the 'y' in Taylor? or because he pronounced it as "Tyler" :). BTW, I sold a black Yamaha drum kit to him (with sturdy silver flight case for stands and cymbals) in the middle 80s (before I moved to Austria) because I had started writing and singing, and he needed a kit for New Zealand bands that were touring the UK. (You might know a few drummers that played on it :)-- andreasegde ( talk) 00:47, 10 August 2008 (UTC) reply

I had to look it up in Matthew Bannister's book Positively George Street, where I figured he'd get a mention. I'm glad I'm not mentioned in that book - Matthew wasn't exactly happy with much of the Dunedin music scene! His former bandmate David Pine operated the mixing desk the first time I played any music in public (long time ago now... Dunedin in the 1980s - happy days). Sadly neither of my own bands got very far, though (nor did my solo work), but it was fun for the most part and some of my music is still out there getting played occasionally. Grutness... wha? 02:16, 10 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Craig was mentioned in a book? Good for Craig. BTW, I have a very funny picture of him climbing out of a kids' playground plastic monster tree at some roadside stop in 1984. :))-- andreasegde ( talk) 02:21, 10 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Re:Craig Taylor

Hi AE - Craig's only mentioned in passing in Matthew's book (p.166):

We peeked out of the Heathrow terminal [...] Where was Craig Taylor of Flying Nun UK, who was to [pick us up] in his VW Kombi van? The taxi cost £20. Eventually we managed to contact a rather tired-sounding Craig who pointed out that he had come to meet us and why hadn't we waited? We soon realised that he always sounded rather tired.

I just remembered a great story: I directed Craig (driving a very large camper van) through the streets of Vienna in 1984, and managed to direct him down every one-way street and small alleyway. He wasn't happy...:)-- andreasegde ( talk) 17:19, 13 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Issue of the Month

The great 'The/the debates' return. Just a glance at The Beatles' talk page will show you the massive amount of space this trivial issue takes up. Some editors have chosen to boycott these debates entirely, and we now have two separate entries in WP:LAME - The 'The/the debates' and the 'member order feud'. Consensus to use a capital 'T' was reached in a straw poll. Editors are reminded not to change the case of the 'T' without first changing consensus.

Andreasegde, thanks for the invitation. Here is my rant :) I really like the concept of wiki(pedia), but it sucks so much on the other hand, that I can only contribute in this way. I have seen too many "admins" killing the german wikipedia and it is starting here too. Quality and culture depends here on each other, but not in terms of faked Encyclopædia Britannica pseudoperfectness. They are killing current cultural information they can't "understand" with the strict usage of WP:NOT/WP:FORUM guidelines. But much of the WP:NOT information is important for the cultural development of the people who are reading wikipedia - even if it is not perfect. Wikipedia has got enough free space for talking it through without the deletion of information. Hmm, I am done ranting, I feel better now, thank you. :)

Worrying reverts

I have noticed that you recently reverted yourself, without first gaining the permission or consensus of yourself, on your userpage. Please note that users are permitted, within limits, to edit their userpages as they wish, and by reverting yourself you are likely to have possibly have perhaps given the impression of being perhaps indifferent to (dis)respecting yourself and your editing. I would strongly urge you to not revert yourself again unless you give yourself permission - preferably in writing (and with a nice picture of a cat, perhaps?) of how you wish to amend your previous edit. Please regard this as an offalise warning! LessHeard vanU ( talk) 20:42, 21 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Hmm, I'm actually hoping it isn't reviewed anytime soon. The longer it's on wait the better. I'm gunno be really busy over the next few weeks (I'm moving home soon), so I wanted to put the Thriller album up for FA and dedicate my time to that now, before I'm too busy. I've been putting it off for long enough. — Realist 2 21:24, 21 August 2008 (UTC) reply

I was thinking of correcting the order of references (12-3-11) and then passing it. Any kind of infobox would be good (Michael's perhaps?). If one looked at it through a spyglass, I'm sure one could find some little things, but it really is a very good article, interesting, and very well written.-- andreasegde ( talk) 22:53, 21 August 2008 (UTC) reply
If your sure it's ready I have no problems you getting on with it :-), I just don't have the time right now to deal with two pages of corrections (something I always envision at these things). Do you think maybe a time line like on Ryan White would be better than an info box? Or would an info box still rock bells more? — Realist 2 23:02, 21 August 2008 (UTC) reply

I don't see much wrong with it. I have added it to my 'favourites', and I will look at it tomorrow. If there are any small problems I will fix them. There are enough book references to satisfy me.-- andreasegde ( talk) 23:16, 21 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Not on your life. I will never darken the doors of an FAC again, and especially not with an article that's "too long", but also has "not enough in it". They can sharpen their knives on someone else's backside, if you forgive my French... :(-- andreasegde ( talk) 18:37, 23 August 2008 (UTC) reply

I noticed the length issue on the previous review. If it's anything, they have relaxed a lot on the too long issue. MJ passed FA at 112 KB and only got 1 oppose for length. There are article that are larger than McCartney that have passed FA. It's up to you, but I think you might be surprised :-) — Realist 2 18:42, 23 August 2008 (UTC) reply

The problem with Macca (to his mates) is there are always too many people throwing things in while it's up for review; you have to watch it all the time. He has a solo section that deserves a GA, and a lot of solo stuff has to be cut out of the main article. I am of the opinion that if you want a pair of jeans, you walk into a shop and buy them, but to go back again is Hell on earth. I'm happy with the GA list for various Beatle-related people who are, or had something to do with, The Beatles (notice how I slipped that one in?) Apologies to anyone that disagrees.

Right; I'm off out, as it's Saturday night and I only have a few days before flying up to Leeds to attend a (possibly, but hopefully not) emotional and physically abusive thing they call a wedding up in them thar hills, by golly-whiz...-- andreasegde ( talk) 18:51, 23 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Your threat of topic-retirement

Consensus seems to be leaning towards a capital T so far, but I urge you to reconsider. You are one of Wikipedia's most prolific Beatles editors, and boycotting related articles over a capital letter is extreme. I'm sure the whole project will be sad to see you go...... Dendodge .. Talk Contribs 15:35, 10 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Sorry Dendodge, but I'm deadly serious. My heart just wouldn't be in it. If the Beatles becomes the policy I will respect it, but I'll be gone.-- andreasegde ( talk) 15:38, 10 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Andreas doesn't threaten - he means it. But it looks as though the long-standing consensus is not going to be overturned, at least I hope so. Tvoz/ talk 00:35, 11 August 2008 (UTC) reply

A different straw poll on Talk:The Beatles

It would be easy to overlook because there are now two polls going at the same time. The newest one is here. Thanks. Ward3001 ( talk) 16:43, 10 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Grutness... wha? 01:14, 12 August 2008 (UTC) reply

I know that "Taylor" New Zealand twang.... It always made me sound like I was flipping-out on speed; it was so laid-back. The quizzical look with one eye always put me off as well... :)) -- andreasegde ( talk) 17:17, 13 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Not quite sure, as it was so long ago. If you think it's wrong, please feel free to change it, or delete it. :)-- andreasegde ( talk) 18:20, 18 August 2008 (UTC) reply
My English it not good enough for such a delicate topic as miscarriage. But I guess there is nothing about that in Stanley Cavells' book. Maybe the same information is in an other well known book about Lennon? But I don't know about that - so I cannot fix this. I will leave it open for discussion in the main article. If nobody knows, maybe deletion is the easiest, but not the best way. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.94.227.122 ( talk) 19:24, 18 August 2008 (UTC) reply

I'll look at it, but thanks for spotting it. Why don't you get a username and join The Beatles Project? Your kind of help would be appreciated. BTW, how's the weather in Dortmund? ( I live in Linz, Austria) :)-- andreasegde ( talk) 19:36, 18 August 2008 (UTC) reply

LOL... :))) I will try to refrain from such goings-on in the future, my dearest, as it clogs up my arteries, and gives me nightmares. Reverting myself? Manuel from Fawlty Towers would say, "He go crazy?" :)-- andreasegde ( talk) 22:46, 21 August 2008 (UTC) reply
BTW, Fawlty Towers is being broadcast on ORF (Austrian TV) as I speak. Spooky or what?-- andreasegde ( talk) 22:48, 21 August 2008 (UTC) reply
"Si, I forget... eventually!" LessHeard vanU ( talk) 22:14, 22 August 2008 (UTC) reply

LOL :)) eventually!" Isn't that the story of life? :)-- andreasegde ( talk) 22:34, 22 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Lol, I'm not that obsessed, although I probably would pass out if I actually meet him. — Realist 2 22:46, 22 August 2008 (UTC) reply
I added your name here about a day ago because you expressed an interest in reviewing it, if you still wanna review it that's cool, if not, remove the message I added. I just didn't want someone else to steal your review since you seemed interested. Cheers :-) — Realist 2 01:22, 23 August 2008 (UTC) reply
Hope you didn't mind me sticking your name down, you seemed genuinely interested and since it was labeled at the top of the page as one of the most backlogged it was only a matter of time before someone else got it. — Realist 2 13:40, 23 August 2008 (UTC) reply

The article has been sent to the GA house of correction, sorry distinction. :)-- andreasegde ( talk) 18:33, 23 August 2008 (UTC) reply

He, great, good review. I can avoid that icky subject for a wile, back to Thriller. You should still nom McCartney for FA, a few weeks of work and it's so ready. — Realist 2 18:34, 23 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Quite frankly, I don’t think that you have contributed nearly enough to Wikipedia, and therefore demand that you pull your finger out of wherever it happens to be, and get stuck in! You don’t get paid to take corners young man. As the third best ’eader of a ball in this team, you should be in the box scoring goals. (You need to imagine Brian Clough saying this).
