According to a newspaper article in The Jersey Journal from June 1918, a spokesman named William A. Wirstiskie represented a group who wanted to change the name of Germania Avenue to Liberty Avenue. 'Why should an American street be named after such a brutal country as Germany?' Wirstiskie asked.
