There are three types of contentious topics alerts (groan). Listed at Template:Contentious topics/alert.

Discretionary sanctions

To put 1RR (the only AE page sanction I care for) on an article, put f ex {{Ds/editnotice|1=1RR|topic=ap}} for American politics at the top of the talkpage, and add an edit notice to the article.

Use {{subst:alert|topic}} to alert users to discretionary sanctions. The template is explicitly "informational only and does not imply misconduct regarding your contributions to date". These alerts expire after one year.

Don't change the English variety:

Protection padlocks:

Use {{pp-protected|small=yes}} for just an icon at the top.

Reason for protecting and/or duration can be added as parameters, which will show on mouseover. Like this: {{pp-vandalism|expiry=17 August 2017|small=yes}} But the reason parameter is fussy, basically only "vandalism" and "blp" work. {{pp-semi-blp|expiry=11 July 2017|small=yes}} will show as "This article is semiprotected until blabla to promote compliance with the policy on biographies of living people." Here's a full list of the pretty useless other reason parameters that will work.

The lock icon will choose automagically between semi, full, and pending changes padlock (silver, gold, and green) according to what protection is in place.

Don't change the English variety:

Protection padlocks:

Reason for protecting and/or duration can be added as parameters, which will show on mouseover. Like this: {{pp-vandalism|expiry=17 August 2017|small=yes}} But the reason parameter is fussy, basically only "vandalism" and "blp" work. {{pp-semi-blp|expiry=11 July 2017|small=yes}} will show as "This article is semiprotected until blabla to promote compliance with the policy on biographies of living people." Here's a full list of the pretty useless other reason parameters that will work.

The lock icon will choose automagically between semi, full, and pending changes padlock (silver, gold, and green) according to what protection is in place.
