Victor Guérin travelled extensively in Palestine in the 19th century, and published his findings in 3 (Judee) + 2 (Samarie) + 2 (Galilee) = 7 volumes. All the volumes are now freely available on the internet.
This page is an attempt to "walk" in Guerin´s footsteps, using the Survey of Western Palestine (=SWP) (and other) maps, and then to "map" his travels to Wikipedia articles.
also comes in handy for those unfamiliar with French.
HA 117, 7- (an example from the list below) refers to p.117 in Hütteroth, Wolf-Dieter; Abdulfattah, Kamal (1977). Historical Geography of Palestine, Transjordan and Southern Syria in the Late 16th Century. 7- refers to "not populated at the end of the British Mandate period," according to HA. (See
User:Huldra/HA) Mostly used when there are no Wikipedia articles, and not likely to be any in the near future.
Note that the same name can refer to different places! Eg. the index for Samarie, p.
435, shows that "Tayebeh" is mentioned in I, 206, 206; II, 352. It turns out the I 206, 207 is for
Taybeh, West Bank, while II, 352 is for
Tayibe, Israel.
