In Belize, life expectancy at birth was 71.1 years for men and 76.6 for women in 2014. [1] The leading causes of death in 2012 were coronary artery disease (10.4%), diabetes mellitus (8.9%), interpersonal violence (8.2%), [a] stroke (7.7%), HIV/AIDS (5.3%), and lower respiratory infections (4.9%). [3]

The Ministry of Health (MoH) is the government agency responsible for overseeing the entire health sector —both public and private— and is the largest provider of public health services in Belize, offering affordable care to a majority of Belizeans through a range of public programs and institutions. [4] [5] The private health sector provides care to a smaller portion of the population, offering health services at a relatively low cost. [4]
