Format

I have been thinking this navigation template over for some time now. If we add all the subdivisions (which IMHO would be nice) to this template, it gets too bulky and overcrowded as you can see. Maybe we would be better off with a different format? I know it will be hard changing all of the oblast formats, so this is just and idea/suggestion. Any other views on my idea? — dima / sb. tk/ 16:23, 5 August 2006 (UTC) reply

This is how I think would be a better solution to the overcrowdedness of the current template. It divides all of the oblast's subdivisions.

Flag of Poltava Oblast Subdivisions of Poltava Oblast, Ukraine Flag of Ukraine
Administrative center: Poltava
Raions:

Chornukhynsky Raion | Chutivsky Raion | Dykansky Raion | Hadyatsky Raion | Hlobynsky Raion | Hrebinkivsky Raion | Karlivsky Raion | Khorolskyi Raion | Kobeliatsky Raion | Kotelevsky Raion | Kozelshchynskyi Raion | Kremenchutskyi Raion | Lokhvytsky Raion | Lubensky Raion | Mashivsky Raion | Myrhorodsky Raion | Novosanzharsky Raion | Orzhytsky Raion | Poltavsky Raion | Pyryatynsky Raion | Reshetylivsky Raion | Semenivsky Raion | Shyshatskyy Raion | Velykobahachansky Raion | Zinkivsky Raion

IMHO, Template:Administrative divisions of Ukraine is the most simple and elegant of all Ukrainian navigational templates. For this reason, I suggested a change at Template talk:Zaporizhzhia Oblast to change the oblast templates to something more like Template:Ukraine. The goal would be to make the individual templates smaller, and then making individual templates for individual raions. The raion templates would list all cities, towns, and villages within the raion. Once those are established:

  • Cities, towns and villages which are subordinate to the raion only, and which do not serve as administrative centers for raions, would only have the raion template.
  • Raions, cities which are subordinate to the oblast, as well as cities, towns and villages which serve as raion centers, would have their raion template as well as the oblast template listed in their article.
  • Oblasts, cities with special status, as well as cities which serve as oblast centers, would have their raion template, the oblast template, as well as the Ukraine template listed in their article.

Also, I liked the consistency of using the coats of arms on the left and the flags on the right. Following the pattern, the raion templates would have the oblast flag on the right, as the oblast templates have the Ukrainian flag on the right.

These are my suggestions. I will crosspost at Talk:Subdivisions of Ukraine.-- tufkaa 17:00, 5 August 2006 (UTC) reply

I agree that something needs to be done with these unwiedly templates. The difference between "towns" and "cities" is not apparent, the profusion of redlinks to raion articles is annoying, while the addition of "City" to every settlement of 5,000 inhabitants is plain ridiculous. -- Ghirla -трёп- 22:24, 5 August 2006 (UTC) reply

What do you think of such kind of styling (i.e. align=left with hanging)?

I think there should be four groups in each template: Raions, Cities, Urban-type settlements, and Villages. These are primary navigational templates, so, I don't thing we should restrict ourselves only to the towns, and villages, which are the administrative centers. At this point, as long as there is an article about a village it's nice to have it in a template. At this point, I think one template per oblast is sufficient.

I also thought about a creation of a template with fields (similar to Template:Infobox Oblast), then for each oblast we only need to provide context as a set of oblast-specific fields, such as Oblast name, Oblast COA, list of raions, list of cities, etc.

Also, I like the current style with Oblast COA to the left, and Ukrainian flag to the right. -- MapLover 23:21, 5 August 2006 (UTC) reply
