Until the 27 September match between Japan and Canada, Japan must be considered as having been eliminated from quarterfinal consideration, but still eligible to finish #3 in Pool A and qualify for 2015. They can do so as follows:
If (and I admit it's a big if) these things all happen, Japan, Canada, and Tonga will finish tied with 5 points. When three teams are tied, the first tie-breaker is points difference. Japan would be the best of the three, thus qualifying for 2015. Now, of course that won't happen, but that is no reason to violate Wikipedia's Crystal Ball policy. There is no combination of results which could prevent this. Even a bonus point win for France in their last game, coupled with a New Zealand loss would see them tied on 15 pts. If this were the case, the head-to-head result takes precedence over points difference. New Zealand defeated France.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.16.222.30 ( talk) 15:11, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
