ALT1: ... that The Betty White Show was the subject of significant controversy after
Betty White refused to fire a black cast member?
Comment: I know this is stretching the rules a bit, but since this is so relevant to current events it would be great to run this ASAP

Oiyarbepsy: Date and hook fine. However this is currently a little too short at 1,252 characters (it needs 1,500). QPQ is not needed as this is his first nomination, just needs to be expanded then ping me and I'll have another look at it. The C of E God Save the Queen! (

Much better with expansion so its now over the limit and QPQ done. Good to go ASAP then. Just a note @

Oiyarbepsy and
The C of E: I was going to promote this, but HITC isn't the most reliable source for this hook—is there a better source we could use?

I swapped out the HITC source for the Washington Post, it seems to cover the same points in the article.

Except—the Washington Post and HITC disagree about the validity of the claim that the show was directly cancelled because of white's opposition. Given the reliability disparity, I'm inclined to defer to the Washington Post and say that there's no clear indication of a causality.

The hook doesn't really assert a direct causation, and both the WP and HITC agree that Duncan was a factor in the show's cancellation. — Preceding

Hmm, not sure? from the Washington Post: It’s unclear whether her decision to keep Duncan affected the show’s fate, but it was repeatedly rescheduled for different time slots before quietly being taken off the air that same year. In other words, it's saying "did this affect anything? no idea, but it sure looks fishy". They're very careful not to say that it had a clear effect. And to be honest, if I wanted to write a hook that did assert causality, ALT0 is how I would write it.

I just made an edit to a related article that
used text from this article and I left off something similar while doing so because of the text from the Washington Post. The only helpful this I can suggest (and more to
Oiyarbepsy) is that the information from The Washington Post seems to be based on a PBS documentary called Pioneers of Television: Betty White - First Lady of Television. Perhaps that might help in some form. --

I modified it slightly to use White's full name and to link it, but it's fine by me. I was somewhat amused by the text "White refused to fire a black"
