Not sure if saying the pilot's skill was the reason the plane avoided a highly-populated area, but it's acceptable. Other than that, length, date, sourcing and QPQ all check out. --

I think the ALT1 hook is oddly worded: "in the surroundings of highly populated areas"? What does that even mean? Something along the lines of "did so near a highly populated area but only killed the three crew members?" is clearer and more direct.

Almost there. Minor grammatical issues, plus I think "occupants" and "on board" are a bit redundant together. I've called that one ALT2; here's ALT3:
