I've templated the 'Genetics' section for being far too long for a broad scope article. The length suggests that it should be moved into its own article space, with only a comprehensible summary of any salient details to remain, and with a hatnote to the main article. -- Iryna Harpy ( talk) 20:02, 25 September 2017 (UTC) reply

Poorly sourced paragraph

There is a paragraph with multiple sourcing problems:

Different from the colonists who settled in North America, who brought their entire families, the Portuguese colonization was almost exclusively composed of men, with a limited presence of women. This lack of women worried the Jesuits, who asked the Portuguese King to send any kind of Portuguese women to Brazil, even the socially undesirable (e.g. prostitutes or women with mental maladies such as Down Syndrome) if necessary. [1] [2]

The first citation here is to a review of the movie Desmundo, which is based on the novel of the same name. The second citation is to the publisher's website regarding the same novel. There are three problems here: (1) neither cited source is a reliable source for historical information; (2) neither cited source even mentions anything about the Jesuits suggesting that the King could send prostitutes or women with mental maladies such as Down syndrome to Brazil to marry the settlers; and (3) the Jesuits could not have referenced Down syndrome, as implied here, three hundred years before it was recognized as a distinct syndrome.

The Crown responded by sending several groups of Iberian orphan maidens to marry both cohorts of marriageable men, the nobles and the peasants. Some of which were even primarily studying to be nuns. [1] [3] ...

The citations here are to the same two sources mentioned above. There are two problems here: (1) again, neither cited source is a reliable source for historical information; and (2) neither cited source even mentions anything about the crown sending women who were already studying to be nuns to marry the settlers.

But most of the first Portuguese settlers also procreated with native Amerindians or African slave women. Over time, the number of Portuguese women immigrating to Brazil grew, but the gender imbalance was never significantly reduced. This male predominance prevailed throughout the colonial period. Historically, the male Portuguese settler preferred to marry a Portuguese born female. But, since their number in Brazil was very small, the second option was to marry a white Brazilian, born to Portuguese parents. The third option was a white Brazilian female of distant Portuguese origin. The scarce presence of white women, either Portuguese or Brazilian, caused the high degree of miscegenation in colonial Brazil.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth sentences quoted here are, at least, not clearly explained. It is unclear why the male Portuguese settlers would have preferences among marrying white women based on whether the women were born in Portugal, born in Brazil with Portuguese-born parents, or born in Brazil with Portuguese-born grandparents. In any event, this text is not cited to anything. -- Metropolitan90 (talk) 03:13, 29 April 2019 (UTC) reply
