suggest an alternative phrasing rather then just removing it, describing a military invasion and occupation as a 'humanitarian intervention' is far from neutral. You can't just say lets invade and occupy a country and not also remark on the consequences. liberal imperialism is well known tactic that has been employed for centuries, she has consistently advocated this for years in Sudan and elsewhere which i've given you several links for. look at her debate with Jeremy Scahill she's no saint. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lostexpectation ( talk • contribs) 19:42, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
The recent facts of Ms. Power's embarrassing statements, which resulted in her resignation from the position of foreign policy advisor to Obama should stand within the article for the time being. Ms. Powers is a brilliant person, who has done much good work. She will continue to much good work, but the current news is a part of her biography. With distance and time, it will be easier to return to a normal bio and remove some of the very recent events and in the context of her life's work, I'm sure it will be a small and insignificant event. But newsworthy items, of recent events, that are sourced, accurate, and involve a significant event belong within the context of a biography of a living person. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.200.36.10 ( talk) 21:33, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Her place of birth, London or Dublin, is unclear. The GRO reference is not a definitive document, it is a transcript by the Freebmd project. Numerous press sources have her place of birth as Ireland. She attended a convent school in Dublin, Mount Anville. Given her apparent Irish nationality, where is a source that supplies information about her stated U.S. citizenship? She certainly appears to have abandoned her homeland completely and now even holds a most sensitive position in the U.S. government. When and how did she acquire U.S. citizenship? It doesn't appear either of her parents were American citizens, so, if she was naturalized, where are the sources that confirm and detail the event?
A new article this morning [2] "Obama will also name Samantha Power, a human rights expert and former White House adviser, to replace Rice as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations." To quote: "The Face of the Benghazi Talking Points Controversy Is Receiving a Promotion — and You Won’t Believe Her Replacement" NY Times: “Defiant gesture to Republicans” Politico: Samantha Power to become new U.N. ambassador (Cass Sunstein’s wife) Flashback: Blaze one of first major outlets to connect Power to Obama’s recent foreign policy Beck: Probably the most dangerous women in America …Video Hannity in 2009: One of the top 10 most dangerous people in the administration
We already have her "Views" in this Wikipedia article, and we probably don't need a "Controversy" section, IMHO, Charles Edwin Shipp ( talk) 15:22, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Hello, could someone please update the citation note of Power's confirmation? The first linked source in the article was for when she was nominated, but now that she was confirmed I think we need to update the source. Of course, I could be wrong. Disenjenous ? The article crosses it's testimony. Saying some fear she doesn't like jews due to a statement years ago. Who appointed her? a jew. Is that a jew she's married to? appears so. The fact of being foregin born (and maybe raised) and NOT knowing if her parents were or are part of the Irish government, and knowing she's often been a broad and is a news person. The media as government? But really I wrote to say. Yes loyalty to U.S.A. concerns is goign to be questioned. It would be lovely to see effort on law and human rights co-ordinate with protecting U.S.A. interests rather than generic human rights. Moreso. The U.N. is bloated that's why I write. It's like the size (or bigger) of a country and the spending upon it is horrific. I've read many U.N. documents and can say: it's become wasteful spending. Reduce the size of U.N. That would help the poor to have money so they can work, the poor the U.N. keep writing more and more remote documents about. The poor the U.N. attack abroad to settle matters that would not be matters if government union spending were not a problem, maybe. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.209.222.174 ( talk) 04:49, 6 August 2013 (UTC) |
I found Power's bio timeline hard to follow. Dates are missing perhaps intentionally. For example:
Under Life and Career -- "Raised in Ireland until she was nine, Power lived in Castleknock and was schooled in .... Dublin until her parents emigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1979... She attended Lakeside High School in Atlanta, where she was a member of the cross country team and the basketball team. She subsequently graduated from Yale University. From 1993 to 1996, she worked as a journalist, covering the Yugoslav Wars for U.S. News & World Report, The Boston Globe, The Economist, and The New Republic. When she returned to the United States, she attended Harvard Law School, receiving her J.D. in 1999.
Stated dates are shown marked with carats (the side box gives her birth year). Parentheses are my estimates of missing information in the bio. This seems to indicated that Power completed Harvard Law School and received her J.D. in record short time. Also "when she returned to the United States, she attended Harvard law school." It is not clear where she was before she returned. Granted she worked as a journalist covering the Yugoslav wars... but she was not on the ground the entire time period.. where was her base, the article would suggest it was not in the U.S., perhaps it was in a Grqnd Hyatt, Mandarin or Shangri-La hotel in the region?
Born 1970
Emigrated to us at nine yrs 1979
(Graduated high school 18 yrs 1988)
(Matriculated Yale undergrad around 1992)
1993-1996 journalist covering the Yugoslav wars
(Harvard law school 1996-1999)

Seems like the balance in views is off. The third paragraph comprises almost 2/3 of the section and after a couple of sections giving background - remarks made suggesting America will need to act to stop a future Israeli acts of genocide, the remainder of the paragraph is about pro-Israeli "opponents" defending her against charges of racism. Reads as defence to the point of conceding guilt. 118.208.76.11 ( talk) 05:39, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

I have my doubts about this text belonging in the article: "Upon her departure from the White House to take up the position as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Abramowitz, Director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's Center for the Prevention of Genocide said: "There is a small group of people that really care about genocide prevention and prevention of mass atrocities, and we all appreciate that we had a real champion for those issue at the highest levels of government. She worked very hard to strengthen the interagency treatment of these issues, and she had a great deal of passion for those issues, and she brought that passion to the government."(Josh Rogin, " Samantha Power leaving White House," Foreign Policy, February 4, 2013.) 178.232.151.70 ( talk) 10:16, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
Her most notable views might belong together with the mention of the position she held, when her views received notable mention. There probably no need for a seperate section towards the top of the article.
"Power is known for her efforts to increase public awareness of genocide and human rights abuses, particularly in the Darfur conflict. In 2006, she contributed to Screamers, a movie about the Darfur, Armenian, and other genocides of the 20th and 21st centuries. While Power was a leading voice calling for armed intervention to prevent mass atrocities in the Balkans and Libya,(Gott, Richard (January 17, 2007). "Britain's vote to end its slave trade was a precursor to today's liberal imperialism". The Guardian. London. Retrieved May 23, 2010.) she emphasizes that the United States has many non-military options for responding: "If you think of foreign policy as a toolbox, there are a whole range of options—you can convene allies, impose economic sanctions, expel ambassadors, jam hate radio. There is always something you can do."(Celestine Bohlen, " On a Mission to Shine a Spotlight on Genocide; Samantha Power's Mind Leaps From Bosnia to Iraq," The New York Times, February 5, 2003.) 178.232.151.70 ( talk) 10:42, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
A source other than Charlie Rose is needed to demonstrate notability of a quote from the Charlie Rose Show. Thereafter notability and relevance has to be demonstrated as to why the quote needs to be in the wikipedia article.
"On February 21, Power appeared on Charlie Rose and compared Barack Obama to Sergio Vieira de Mello, who is the subject of Chasing the Flame. "This would be Sergio's lesson: if you are not thinking in terms of both dignity and freedom from fear, and this is the other thing Obama has come back to, the old Rooseveltian idea. Obama has tried to run a campaign that moves us out of the politics of fear. He is also very sensitive to the degree to which, and Sergio uses this line, 'fear is a bad adviser.' This is a line that could have come out of Obama's mouth, though happened to come out of Sergio's mouth. We make bad judgments when we are afraid."( "A conversation with Samantha Power". Powers said about a thousand things during the presidential election, possibly including the following sentence in quotation marks: ""Armenians for Obama" uploaded a video of Power to YouTube where she referred to Obama's "unshakeable conscientiousness" regarding genocide in general and the Armenian genocide in particular, as well as saying that he would "call a spade a spade, and speak the truth about it".( Video on YouTube)
Are there any references that prove that Obama has not been "calling a spade a spade, and speak[ing] the truth about" that spade?
Regarding the Armenian Genocide, has Powers promised by what date the president would have performed specific actions? 46.212.32.227 ( talk) 05:51, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
Breaking news in the (London) Telegraph (www.telegraph.co.uk/) on 18 April 2016. Vehicle running over the child, who ran into road, was a convoy escort, not Power's own. This page incorrectly lists her as Jewish. I bring it up because the same page lists Brian Chesky's name right next to Power (he's an Italian-Polish Catholic), and someone is trying to use that "source" to list Chesky as Jewish on Wikipedia. Obviously, if Chesky is to be listed as Jewish, so should Power be. So can someone tell the people on that page that their "source" is obviously ridiculous? I just checked wikipedia for info on Ms Power with respect to the unmasking controversy. There is nothing there. The only controversial element is her "monster" remark referring to Hillary Clinton. The article as it is appears almost like self promotion bio. The unmasking controversy is getting ever more media attention. The ability of our intelligence agencies to protect us from terrorism is enabled by a few laws that allow a type of "wiretapping" on US citizens in certain circumstances, but the names are masked. The unmasking controversy is showing that the intelligence apparatus was being used for political attacks and thus Congress may prohibit the renewal of the laws in question because the safeguards were trampled. We don't want the terrorists to get the upper hand, so we really need to report the unmasking in hopes that it will be forever stopped, and the law renewed with unmasking violations punished where and when appropriate. Silence is a form of approval. Wikipedia should be above the political aspect of the controversy and just report the truth. Knowsetfree ( talk) 16:17, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Her place of birth, London or Dublin, is unclear. The GRO reference is not a definitive document, it is a transcript by the Freebmd project. Numerous press sources have her place of birth as Ireland. She attended a convent school in Dublin, Mount Anville. BTW the reference above to “protestant part” and “catholic part” is the height of ignorance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.64.163.145 ( talk) 12:01, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
I'd do it myself but I'm not exactly sure how to and I don't want to mess anything up. Thanks! Zarash6767 ( talk) 08:53, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Breaking news in the (London) Telegraph (www.telegraph.co.uk/) on 18 April 2016. Vehicle running over the child, who ran into road, was a convoy escort, not Power's own. Possibly worth inclusion once story matures. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.76.96.151 ( talk) 21:58, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
(and makes ANOTHER error on the same page, Reid Hoffman). Dohodho ( talk) 22:44, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
