The initial paragraph of this article states:

"Russian casualties of war lists deaths of Russian armed forces and Russian citizens caused by conflicts in which the Russia was involved."

The table of casualties then states that 562000 Russian citizens (not Soviet military personnel) were killed during the 1979-1988 Soviet-Afghan conflict.
