Hello, can the creator of this article please add some references to it? It has been prodded twice and disputed, so obviously a number of people are concerned about it being unreferenced. If you are going to dispute the prod, can you please address the concerns about the article? Otherwise it will probably end up at AfD. It probably only needs a couple of in-line citations to make it acceptable if the subject is notable. If you are unsure how to add citations, please look at WP:CITE, as it will tell you all you need to know. Regarding notability of subjects, a couple of relevant guidelines/essays to consider are WP:GNG and WP:MILPEOPLE. Thank you. — AustralianRupert ( talk) 22:40, 15 March 2010 (UTC) reply

I'm not the creator, but I've tried to improve it to the point of viability. I don't know what constitutes notability, but this person was portrayed as a major character in a major Hollywood film, so there's some cultural significance I think. Someone who is better with formatting the references please help. Agent Cooper ( talk) 07:10, 12 May 2010 (UTC) reply

Sketchy history

I tried to add a few more details, and I'm not sure that 1910 reference (via Google Books) is firm enough; the author admits he was unable to speak with Noland. I find -lots- more references to him online, but most of it looked pretty shaky, e.g., unsourced claims that someone tried to bribe him with $10,000 to sellout but he refused, some newsletter writeups, etc. All that I felt was less firm than the 1910 book I added in. If there's a reliable source out there, great; I can't find it. I also found a reference that his tombstone was placed in the wrong cemetery, so clearly even well-intentioned people working hard on the research were struggling to find definitive answers. (And, no, I couldn't confirm the cemetery for certain, either -- it may have been Blue Springs, or may have been Woodlawn in Independence.) This article is screaming to be adopted by someone with access to records in Kansas and Missouri.-- Thatnewguy ( talk) 03:30, 27 July 2010 (UTC) reply

and I should add this article is sorely missing information on why a black man fought for the Confederacy. Again, I didn't find what I felt to be appropriate sourcing. I also suggested this article be considered by WikiProject Kansas.-- Thatnewguy ( talk) 03:37, 27 July 2010 (UTC) reply

According to the Wikipedia article on Quantrill's Raiders, John Noland fought for the Confederacy and at Quantrill's side because Noland's family members had suffered abuse at the hands of Jayhawkers (northern sympathizers). Younggoldchip ( talk) 19:09, 13 March 2014 (UTC) reply

Unfortunately, that information doesn't have any citations. Mobi Ditch ( talk) 02:42, 11 February 2019 (UTC) reply
