Any relation to Expert?

Is there any relation between this project and the European Experimental Rentry Testbed (Expert)? ( announcement) -- IanOsgood ( talk) 00:24, 18 July 2009 (UTC) reply

Well, they are both re-entry experiments/technology test-beds but they are most definitely two separate programmes. IXV is part of ESA's Future Launchers Preparatory Programme while EXPERT is funded through the Basic Technology Research Programme and the General Support Technology Programme. Update

Article needs updating with successful helicopter drop test with sub orbital drop test from Vega launcher next year and plans for followup PRIDE reusable robotic orbiter craft. WatcherZero ( talk) 21:11, 20 June 2013 (UTC) reply

Jargon

This article is mostly unreadable jargon (unless you are a rocket scientist). 58.168.244.174 12 February 2015

There is quite a lot covered in relatively simpler terms and links to some terms like lifting body. The rest can be ignored by a newcomer. It's pretty hard to dumb down a technical subject.  Stepho   talk  05:26, 12 February 2015 (UTC) reply

Aviation

Sources call this a spaceplane [1] [2] [3] [4] so seems like it should be an Aviation topic -- 65.94.43.89 ( talk) 10:47, 6 April 2015 (UTC) reply

Not really a spaceplane; it's a lifting-body entry vehicle. Some popular sources do call it a spaceplane, but the actual technical documents don't. (Notice that it actually uses parachutes to land). Geoffrey.landis ( talk) 13:48, 2 July 2021 (UTC) reply

More details on parachutes used

Is any detail published on the parachutes used on the Feb 2015 reentry ? eg number, shape, diameter/dimensions, descent rate, weight of parachutes ? - Rod57 ( talk) 14:47, 20 August 2016 (UTC) reply

ESA mag artist impression shows single round parachute. Video talks of hypersonic drogue, hypersonic parachute, supersonic parachute with staged dereefing. - Rod57 ( talk) 10:23, 21 August 2016 (UTC) reply

How does it compare to say X37

What lift to drag ratio at various air speeds

ESA says L/D=0.7 at hypersonic entry velocities: https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2011/12/IXV . Geoffrey.landis ( talk) 13:53, 2 July 2021 (UTC) reply

Context and hierarchy of programs and names

The European Space Agency has a program called Future Launchers Preparatory Programme (FLPP), which made a call for submissions for a reusable spaceplane. [5]. Of all the submissions, one was by the Italian Space Agency, that presented their own Programme for Reusable In-orbit Demonstrator in Europe (PRIME program) which went ahead to develop the prototype called Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV) and the consequential Space Rider that inherits technology from its prototype IXV. [1]

In other words, the Italian Space Agency created the PRIME program, under which they produced the [sequential] spaceplanes IXV and Space Rider for the ESA programme called Future Launchers Preparatory Programme. Also, there is no "PRIME Spacecraft", but PRIME's spacecraft. I will go ahead and edit this info in the article. Also, I encourage other editors to discuss the proposed merge of IXV and Space Rider Cheers, Rowan Forest ( talk) 19:40, 15 November 2018 (UTC) reply
