Gottlieb Burckhardt references

I think the footnote is excessive for a mention of Burckhardt in the introduction. Perhaps some of the references will be useful for the Burckhardt article - also the bit about how different authors treat the subject. I think the Kotowitz reference is enough to make the point - perhaps there is another one you feel is especially relevant? . [1]
