Ashworth is a HOSPITAL. It exists to provide treatment to people who are ill. Is it appropriate for this page to link to indivdual patients details? The hospital itself will never confirm or deny the presence of any indidual as a resident or not ...

Depends on your definition of "insane" - I happen to believe that people experiencing mental *illness* deserve treatment (and protection) and, indeed, that its a marker for the civilisation of a society whether or not this is provided. High secure hospitals in the UK work with people who may have done unpleasant things, but if they were sent to hospital rather than prison it is because the court decided that they were not responsible for their actions at the time. So I don't think that "criminally insane" is a useful concept - every human being is potentially vulnerable to mentall illness, anyone sufficiently mentally ill could be capable of reacting inappropriately - possibly (though rarely) violently - to a given situation.

Dare I claim a point of principle? I don't actually care if any one person in Ashworth or any other hospital has (or has not) a problem with people knowing where s/he is (though some don't have much choice in the matter) but if you assume that its OK for one person's name to be banded about (check out the tabloids some time) then its potentially open season on everyone else. Which is what I care about. Sorry if you don't.

I think your making a gross exgageration. Do you think the Ian Brady article should mention his current location. The point of the article is to describe Ashworth and whilst Brady is not typical having a reference to him aides that.-- Jirate 00:50, 23 July 2005 (UTC) reply

Actually, no, I don't think biographies on anyone should mention their current location - I'm not posting my hoome address and I'm choosing to do this. More to the point, though, I'm not sure what this "aids" - the demonisation of an individual or the acceptance of a HOSPITAL as a valid centre for health care and treatment?
