Yes,stayed up with the rest of the TV audience into the middle of the night to see his overturning of a huge early deficit against the Nugget with that final black victory,accompanied by enthusiastic celebrations! After receiving the trophy and the adulation that goes with it he chose to treat the audience present (and briefly the lingering TV cameras) to his repetoire of jokes while back in his home town of Coalisland in County Tyrone there were reportedly several hundred people partying it up in his street with a brass band going full pelt at 3 o'clock in the morning.

John Dunning, who suffered a heart attack at the Rothmans Grand Prix the previous October, was back playing for the first time. He ended his session 3-6 down against Wayne Jones. [1]

All competitors to be tested for illegal drugs, in line with Sports Council recommendations. Banned substances are those already prohibited in other sports. Decided at WPBSA board meeting 9 April 1985. Also to apply for WPBSA tournaments in future - penalties (after appeal process exhausted) to be fine equivalent to prize money won in that tournament, loss of ranking points from that tournament, ban from the next six ranking tournaments. Second offence would lead to lifetime ban. [2]

First round: Knowles led 4-0, Tony Jones made it 4-4. Then 5-4 to Knowles. Jones led 8-5 but lost 10-8. Knowles, as first winner in the tournament, was the first to take a drugs test. [3]

Testing via urine samples in presence of a doctor and a tournament official. analysis takes about a week, so in later stages results will be after end of tournament. The results will not detect beta blockers, drugs which could help players. Testing at instigation of Barry Hearn. There had been rumours of drug taking in the sport.. [4]

No breaks above 30 in first 3 frames of Higgins v Reynolds. Reynolds won frame 5, Higgins won session 8-1. Virgo led Meo 5-4. Griffiths v Williams was a slow match. Session finished after 7 rather than 9 frames, Griffiths leading 6-1. [5]

Griffiths' 6-1 lead over Williams tool 3hrs 38 mins. Highest break in that match was 51. Meo took 6 frames in a row in 2nd session and beat Virgo 10-5. Charlton leading J Campbell 6-1. [6]

Daily Star had published a story 15 April 1985 alleging drug abuse by a snooker start, relying on statements said to be from Silvino Francisco. Francisco finished his first session 8-1 down. He claimed the Daily Star headline was a "total lie". [7]

S. Fransisco lost 10-2 to Dennis Taylor. Taylor won Irish Prof Championship, beating Higgins 10-5 in the final, the previous week, and was playing well, including break of 128. Reardon (age 52) had worn glasses in two tournament before using a green eyeshade in B&H Irish Masters, but wore neither when winning 10-9 against Hughes. Hughes had won their previous two matches in the season. Patsy Fagan had been suffering from a "psychological block which rendered him unable to strike even the cue ball when using a rest" had qualified, led Thorne 5-4. [8]

Franciso and Rex Williams (WPBSA) chair held join press conference. Williams said no evidence of drug use in the sport. Francisco apologised to Kirk Stevens, the player named in the Daily Star articles. [9]

Fagan's psychological block around using the rest had developed following a car accident, but ended six months before 1985 world championship. He beat Thorne 10-6. Spencer, suffering from double vision and having only won two matches all season, lost 10-3 to Parrot. Werbeniuk had not won any matches all season, but beat Joe Johnson 10-8 including a 143 in the 10th frame, 3rd highest break in championship history to that point. [10]

Stevens beat Edmonds 10-8 but was did not play to the standard expected of top 4 player. Knowles 4-4 Mountjoy. Hallet 7-3 Thorburn, became 8-8. [11]

Davis 3-0 David Taylor, later 6-3. Davis won 13-4, including breaks of 100 (8th frame) and 105 (11th frame). Griffiths was trailing Higgins 2-3 but ended session 5-3 ahead. Meo 4-4 white. [12]

Griffiths beat Higgins 13-7, winning 3 of last 4 frames - it had earlier been 5-5. Reardon 4-4 Fagan. [13]

Reardon fluked back to lead Fagan 8-5, it was 9-7 to Reardon at the end of the session. Parrot 6-2 Stevens. [14]

Reardon's cue tip came off a few shots away from beating Fagan. Fagan lent him his own cue to complete the match. [15]

Parrot led Reardon 4-0 then 5-3. Knowles was on break of 137 but lost position on the pink and missed black - if he had potted it, would have beaten Werbeniuk for high break of the tournament. Knowles led White 5-2. Taylor led Thorburn 4-0 then 4-2. Session finished after 6 rather than 8 frames - took 4 hours 14 minutes. 6th frame took 58 minutes. However, Taylor vs Thorburn 2reamined interesting … because of the high quality of the tactical play." Davis went in-off the black to lost first frame against Griffiths. Griffiths took 4-0 lead but Davis levelled at 4-4. [16]

Griffiths was behind to Davis 10-6, then fouled a ball with his waistcoat, and ended up losing 13-6. Knowles 5-3 then 8-6 and 9-7 against White - Knowles break of 89 in the 16th frame. Taylor beat Thorburn - highest break of the match was 70. 9 hours 45 mins of play to get to 10-5 when it was adjourned at 1.21am. Parrott 93 break to lead Reardon 7-3, lose next two, then 114 to lead 9-5. 9-7 at end of session. [17]

Reardon was behind 9-5, won 7 frames in a row to lead Parrot 12-5 before winning 13-12. Taylor was behind 2-0 to Knowles but led 5-3 at end of sessiom. [18]

Taylor started his tournament two days after beating Higgins for Irish title. From 5-3 ahead, led Knowles 9-3 then 10-5. Knowles asked for another chair because of light shining in his eyes. This was provided, and the light was dimmed during the mid-session interval. David 5-2 then 9-5 against Reardon. [19]

Taylor won 6 consecutive frames to complete 16-5 win over Knowles. Knowles play was at lower standard than in earlier rounds. Taylor had been 10-5 at end of previous session. Bookmakers odds on him beating Davis in the final were 9/4 but reduced to 7/4 following money placed on him to win. [20]

At 8-0 to Davis, Coral bookmakers reduced to odds on an 18-0 whitewash from 300/1 to 100/1. [21]

For the first time in it's history, the Irish Times stopped it's presses shortly after midnight on sunday, to be able to print the result. [22]

Steve Longworth scored the first century of the competition. Clearance of 100 in 11th frame to take 6-5 lead over Cripsey. [23]

Newbury made a 134 break v Burke. Chaperon break 110 and 101 v Burke. Chalmers a 107 v Black. [24]

Fowler had highest break of qualifying, 137, but still lost 10-2 to Parrott. [25]

WPBSA Drugs Testing. List of banned substances includes "narcotics, steroids and stimulants affecting the central nervous system" [26]

Quote from Virgo, beaten by Meo: "I don't think Tony played well enough to beat me. It was the run of the balls that beat me. That's the way it has been for me for six years. I can't explain it. I practice hard. I play well, but sometimes that is not enough. You need a bot of luck in this game and I didn't get any at all." [27]

BBC coverage involves 140 staff and estimated to cost £3million. about 90 hours of coverage. Around £5m staked in bets on the tournament - one person bet £5,000 on Jimmy White to win, would win £43,750. Coral bookmakers have abetting shop in the Crucible foyer for the event. [28]

  • I would put [a] in parentheses as part of the prose rather than as a footnote.
  • "; the first event taking place" either "took" with the semi-colon or replace the semi-colon with a comma and keep "taking".
  • "Preston Guildhall" Guild Hall appears to be two words. And in the prose.
  • "for 87 players; 16 of these players reached the main stage" -> |for 87 players, 16 of whom reached the main stage"
  • No need to link cigarette. Nor in the main prose.
  • " he took an early 8–0 lead," -> "Davis took.."
  • "and later drew level at 17–17" later is redundant.
  • "a deciding frame. The 35th frame was " might be confusing to those who aren't aware that the "deciding" frame was also the 35th frame.
  • "After both players missed the shot," they weren't playing the same shot, perhaps just remove "the shot".

Problems with Final table

I've discovered some discrepancies in the tabulated results for the final at bottom of Main draw section.

  • According to the sources (e.g. this BBC one), there were just 7 frames played in the first session. I picked that up in January and fixed it in the body of the article in this diff. The table of results for the final currently says "Session 1: 8–0" but it should say "Session 1: 7–0". After the 9 frames played in the second session, the score was 9–7, so the session result should read "Session 2: 2–7 (9–7)" not "Session 2: 1–8 (9–8)". I'm not sure about sessions 3 and 4 but they might also be scewed by one frame. If there were 8 frames played in the third session, this should read "Session 3: 4–4 (13–11)" but that needs checking out.
  • Steve Davis' highest break is shown as 87, but which frame was that in and why is it not indicated anywhere in the results table? I can see that he made an 86 in frame 25 but I can't find an 87.
  • The winner of each frame is shown with a dagger symbol (†) but the winning score is also indicated with bold text, so I'm wondering if the daggers are overkill and therefore superfluous because it's clear from the bold/not-bold figures who won the frame.

Greenwich Mean Time?

Yes,stayed up with the rest of the TV audience into the middle of the night to see his overturning of a huge early deficit against the Nugget with that final black victory,accompanied by enthusiastic celebrations! After receiving the trophy and the adulation that goes with it he chose to treat the audience present (and briefly the lingering TV cameras) to his repetoire of jokes while back in his home town of Coalisland in County Tyrone there were reportedly several hundred people partying it up in his street with a brass band going full pelt at 3 o'clock in the morning.

John Dunning, who suffered a heart attack at the Rothmans Grand Prix the previous October, was back playing for the first time. He ended his session 3-6 down against Wayne Jones. [1]

All competitors to be tested for illegal drugs, in line with Sports Council recommendations. Banned substances are those already prohibited in other sports. Decided at WPBSA board meeting 9 April 1985. Also to apply for WPBSA tournaments in future - penalties (after appeal process exhausted) to be fine equivalent to prize money won in that tournament, loss of ranking points from that tournament, ban from the next six ranking tournaments. Second offence would lead to lifetime ban. [2]

First round: Knowles led 4-0, Tony Jones made it 4-4. Then 5-4 to Knowles. Jones led 8-5 but lost 10-8. Knowles, as first winner in the tournament, was the first to take a drugs test. [3]

Testing via urine samples in presence of a doctor and a tournament official. analysis takes about a week, so in later stages results will be after end of tournament. The results will not detect beta blockers, drugs which could help players. Testing at instigation of Barry Hearn. There had been rumours of drug taking in the sport.. [4]

No breaks above 30 in first 3 frames of Higgins v Reynolds. Reynolds won frame 5, Higgins won session 8-1. Virgo led Meo 5-4. Griffiths v Williams was a slow match. Session finished after 7 rather than 9 frames, Griffiths leading 6-1. [5]

Griffiths' 6-1 lead over Williams tool 3hrs 38 mins. Highest break in that match was 51. Meo took 6 frames in a row in 2nd session and beat Virgo 10-5. Charlton leading J Campbell 6-1. [6]

Daily Star had published a story 15 April 1985 alleging drug abuse by a snooker start, relying on statements said to be from Silvino Francisco. Francisco finished his first session 8-1 down. He claimed the Daily Star headline was a "total lie". [7]

S. Fransisco lost 10-2 to Dennis Taylor. Taylor won Irish Prof Championship, beating Higgins 10-5 in the final, the previous week, and was playing well, including break of 128. Reardon (age 52) had worn glasses in two tournament before using a green eyeshade in B&H Irish Masters, but wore neither when winning 10-9 against Hughes. Hughes had won their previous two matches in the season. Patsy Fagan had been suffering from a "psychological block which rendered him unable to strike even the cue ball when using a rest" had qualified, led Thorne 5-4. [8]

Franciso and Rex Williams (WPBSA) chair held join press conference. Williams said no evidence of drug use in the sport. Francisco apologised to Kirk Stevens, the player named in the Daily Star articles. [9]

Fagan's psychological block around using the rest had developed following a car accident, but ended six months before 1985 world championship. He beat Thorne 10-6. Spencer, suffering from double vision and having only won two matches all season, lost 10-3 to Parrot. Werbeniuk had not won any matches all season, but beat Joe Johnson 10-8 including a 143 in the 10th frame, 3rd highest break in championship history to that point. [10]

Stevens beat Edmonds 10-8 but was did not play to the standard expected of top 4 player. Knowles 4-4 Mountjoy. Hallet 7-3 Thorburn, became 8-8. [11]

Davis 3-0 David Taylor, later 6-3. Davis won 13-4, including breaks of 100 (8th frame) and 105 (11th frame). Griffiths was trailing Higgins 2-3 but ended session 5-3 ahead. Meo 4-4 white. [12]

Griffiths beat Higgins 13-7, winning 3 of last 4 frames - it had earlier been 5-5. Reardon 4-4 Fagan. [13]

Reardon fluked back to lead Fagan 8-5, it was 9-7 to Reardon at the end of the session. Parrot 6-2 Stevens. [14]

Reardon's cue tip came off a few shots away from beating Fagan. Fagan lent him his own cue to complete the match. [15]

Parrot led Reardon 4-0 then 5-3. Knowles was on break of 137 but lost position on the pink and missed black - if he had potted it, would have beaten Werbeniuk for high break of the tournament. Knowles led White 5-2. Taylor led Thorburn 4-0 then 4-2. Session finished after 6 rather than 8 frames - took 4 hours 14 minutes. 6th frame took 58 minutes. However, Taylor vs Thorburn 2reamined interesting … because of the high quality of the tactical play." Davis went in-off the black to lost first frame against Griffiths. Griffiths took 4-0 lead but Davis levelled at 4-4. [16]

Griffiths was behind to Davis 10-6, then fouled a ball with his waistcoat, and ended up losing 13-6. Knowles 5-3 then 8-6 and 9-7 against White - Knowles break of 89 in the 16th frame. Taylor beat Thorburn - highest break of the match was 70. 9 hours 45 mins of play to get to 10-5 when it was adjourned at 1.21am. Parrott 93 break to lead Reardon 7-3, lose next two, then 114 to lead 9-5. 9-7 at end of session. [17]

Reardon was behind 9-5, won 7 frames in a row to lead Parrot 12-5 before winning 13-12. Taylor was behind 2-0 to Knowles but led 5-3 at end of sessiom. [18]

Taylor started his tournament two days after beating Higgins for Irish title. From 5-3 ahead, led Knowles 9-3 then 10-5. Knowles asked for another chair because of light shining in his eyes. This was provided, and the light was dimmed during the mid-session interval. David 5-2 then 9-5 against Reardon. [19]

Taylor won 6 consecutive frames to complete 16-5 win over Knowles. Knowles play was at lower standard than in earlier rounds. Taylor had been 10-5 at end of previous session. Bookmakers odds on him beating Davis in the final were 9/4 but reduced to 7/4 following money placed on him to win. [20]

At 8-0 to Davis, Coral bookmakers reduced to odds on an 18-0 whitewash from 300/1 to 100/1. [21]

For the first time in it's history, the Irish Times stopped it's presses shortly after midnight on sunday, to be able to print the result. [22]

Steve Longworth scored the first century of the competition. Clearance of 100 in 11th frame to take 6-5 lead over Cripsey. [23]

Fowler had highest break of qualifying, 137, but still lost 10-2 to Parrott. [25]

Quote from Virgo, beaten by Meo: "I don't think Tony played well enough to beat me. It was the run of the balls that beat me. That's the way it has been for me for six years. I can't explain it. I practice hard. I play well, but sometimes that is not enough. You need a bot of luck in this game and I didn't get any at all." [27]

BBC coverage involves 140 staff and estimated to cost £3million. about 90 hours of coverage. Around £5m staked in bets on the tournament - one person bet £5,000 on Jimmy White to win, would win £43,750. Coral bookmakers have abetting shop in the Crucible foyer for the event. [28]

Probably better to move the cited time back to when it is initially described and ditch this repeat.
  • "late mother,[59] who had died the previous year. " remove comma, move ref to end of sentence.
  • "defeating Cliff Thorburn in the final.[59] Returning to Northern Ireland, " this is odd chronologically, because the World Championship happened between these two sentences...
  • You mention Taylor's press conference in the "Final" section but wait until the Legacy section before mentioning Davis'...

Problems with Final table

I've discovered some discrepancies in the tabulated results for the final at bottom of Main draw section.

  • According to the sources (e.g. this BBC one), there were just 7 frames played in the first session. I picked that up in January and fixed it in the body of the article in this diff. The table of results for the final currently says "Session 1: 8–0" but it should say "Session 1: 7–0". After the 9 frames played in the second session, the score was 9–7, so the session result should read "Session 2: 2–7 (9–7)" not "Session 2: 1–8 (9–8)". I'm not sure about sessions 3 and 4 but they might also be scewed by one frame. If there were 8 frames played in the third session, this should read "Session 3: 4–4 (13–11)" but that needs checking out.
  • Steve Davis' highest break is shown as 87, but which frame was that in and why is it not indicated anywhere in the results table? I can see that he made an 86 in frame 25 but I can't find an 87.
  • The winner of each frame is shown with a dagger symbol (†) but the winning score is also indicated with bold text, so I'm wondering if the daggers are overkill and therefore superfluous because it's clear from the bold/not-bold figures who won the frame.

Greenwich Mean Time?

It says "The final frame lasted more than an hour, finishing after midnight Greenwich Mean Time." As it was in late April, should that not be British Summer Time? If it was 12:23am BST that would only be 11:23pm GMT. 82.20.53.85 ( talk) 15:04, 3 May 2021 (UTC) reply
