Epicenter map

The intro states the the epicenter was probably offshore, and the map's caption even states that the location is unknown, yet the map bears a large "target" centered on land. This seems to fly in the face of both locational statements, suggesting both a well-known location and that it is onshore. I'd delete that. -- Piledhigheranddeeper ( talk) 18:33, 11 January 2012 (UTC) reply

There is much discussion about the actual epicentral location, so I decided to use the one from the CFTI4MED Italian Catalogue (ref #2). When I expanded the article I tried to leave the original text where possible, which has led to this inconsistency, although it does reflect the sources. The location is given as offshore based on the tsunami, but recent work suggests that this was triggered by a submarine landslide, telling us nothing about the exact epicentre. I'll look again at all the sources for the location. My main reason for using the CFTI4MED one was, as I recall, because the offshore epicentres were just dots on maps, not precise coordinates. I've changed the epicentre to the one given by NGDC. It's on the coast and I think is a better compromise between those given well onshore and those given a long way offshore. I've reworded the lede slightly. Mikenorton ( talk) 22:36, 11 January 2012 (UTC) reply
