I'm not sure if this page should actually redirect to the British Open (Wimbledon Championships tennis), although that will be where most people will link to. Maybe the following construction should be used:
Put the page about the tennis championships on Wimbledon Championships
Redirect Wimbledon to Wimbledon Championships
add a notice (at the top or bottom) for the town (or neighbourhood?) of Wimbledon in London
The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
As the person who last cleared out the links leading to
Wimbledon, although most were for the tennis, a few were for the place, a few for the football club, a few for the train station and one for the the film. When I was done I certainly felt that doubt existed and the dab page should remain. I wish this discussion had commenced earlier so I could have recorded some stats (maybe next time if anyone is interested). --

To me, the most important thing is what most people think of when they think of "Wimbledon". My guess is the tennis tournament. Almost anyone outside of the U.K. is thinking of the tournament - and that's a lot of people. Just because there are a lot of pages with Wimbledon in their name and editors have linked a lot of them to each other doesn't mean that the tennis tournament still isn't the most popular destination. But if I'm in the minority with that opinion, then so be it. —

The page hit stats are not kept and so are not available, due to server load I believe. It's always a tricky balance with cases like these, it still amazes me that [American] doesn't redirect to
United States.--

The following is a closed discussion of a
requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a
move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: No consensus for the disambiguation page, but tournament moved to
Wimbledon Championships. Since the two moves were for different reasons, they are to have separate conclusions.
The primary topic debate failed to reach a consensus. The opposition implicitly argued that the namesake town had competitive long-term significance and lack of confidence on the usage while the tournament is not running, while the supporters relied on the brute force of pageviews evidence. Nobody can budge. A rerun of this issue in another RM could help clarify an answer.
Participants generally rejected the original proposed tournament title, and multiple opposers in addition to a supporter and a neutral party supported
Wimbledon Championships instead; the appeal of this other suggestion across disparate opinions of these participants made this appear to be the title with the firmest consensus. (

– Primary topic for this title is the tennis tournament. The tournament even has their website at
Wimbledon.com. The town has longer history but is not as well known. It appears a different proposal was
discussed here (moving the town to primary) with many editors instead suggesting The Championships, Wimbledon -> Wimbledon.

Support. The tournament is widely-known as Wimbledon - I've only ever seen the tournament organisers refer to it as "The Championships", and there's no alternative name like the "British Open" as with other grand slams. Wimbledon as in the London suburb is generally well-known solely for hosting the tournament.
WP:PRIMARY applies in the same way that Silverstone refers to
Silverstone Circuit and Ascot refers to
Ascot Racecourse. I suggest
Wimbledon →
Wimbledon (disambiguation), and a hatnote on the tournament's page to
Wimbledon, London and the dab page.

Support the tennis tournament is easily the primary topic. It is pretty much the only term used in both casual and press conversations. Many events use Championship(s) in their official titles but that has no bearing on the common name. The US Open hits you in the face at their
official facebook page with US Open Tennis Championships... but we don't use that. The event should be at
Wimbledon. Even "Wimbledon tennis championships" would be an improvement.

Neutral. Agree that the tennis tournament is the primary topic but would prefer Wimbledon Championships as the name as that is a good middle ground between the official and the common name.--

There is one issue with that terminology. Per what's been happening Wikipedia-wide, unless you can show that in sentence format the word "Championship" is always capitalized, the article would have to be titled "Wimbledon championships."

Oppose. Although it is widely addressed as Wimbledon, the formal term of the tournament is simply The Championships. To rename the article would only add confusion with the
town area of the same name, which is completely unnecessary. Similarly,
Rugby union is often referred to as rugby, but there isn't a consensus to rename the Wikipedia article to rugby.
