I have removed the redirect to the hiking page. The term tramping or "to tramp" is a commonly used description of a popular activity so it does warrant its own page. Alan Liefting 21:46, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Sorry to raise this again, but I think it needs some more consideration. I notice that Tramping presently redirects to Hiking, and apparently there's been some controversy. The Hiking article states in its introduction that Tramping typically refers to overnight hiking, and then goes on to say that overnight hiking is called Backpacking (wilderness). I don't dispute any of this, and to be honest the Hiking article doesn't at all resemble what I think of as tramping -- when I read the content of the Hiking article, I think of what I call a day walk. (For one thing, the people in the photos aren't carrying anything.) Given the explicit definitions at the beginning of the hiking article which already seem to spell it out, I wonder if it'd make more sense for Tramping to redirect to Backpacking (wilderness) instead of Hiking. The Backpacking article is too US-focused for a redirect from tramping (campfires? animals?), yet Hiking has a lot of information in it that would be useful for both. It seems to me that the US vs UK dialects are obscuring the common elements to both, which are walking in the wilderness for long periods. I think there's an argument to merge them all together. Meanwhile I'll try and add a more international flavour to the Backpacking page. -- Tirana 22:13, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
