Empress_Dowager_Cixi#Behind_the_Curtains statest that Tongzhi means "collective rule". Meanings are fluid, but the meaning given here is subtly but importantly different. Which is correct? Pbhj ( talk) 21:27, 7 July 2008 (UTC) reply

Sorry for the more than a decade delay, Pbhj, and don't know if yo're still interested, but I just saw this. Tongzhi#1 and Tongzhu#2 are homonyms, different words; "tong" does mean "the same," or "shared," but zhi is a different character, one means "rule" and the other means "will." ch ( talk) 22:12, 11 June 2020 (UTC) reply
