Though I can't find anything saying he ever did accept the silver medal for the Olympics, the closest I came was this article:

I can tell you that he has never expressed interest in excepting his medal, because i am his niece. He should have had the gold but and him and his teammates are not going to except silver when they deserve gold. His meadl and the rest of the teams meadls are in the olympic vault in Russia. And none of his teammates have expressed interest in recieving their's either. —Preceding

I that the name on his birth certificate? I have never seen Burleson referred to as anything but "Tom" before seeing a bluelink to this article. See, e.g., the only reference for this article.
