I have moved this page to James Stephen Smith as this is his full name per these pages: [1] [2] [3]
This is to avoid confusion with another NHL defenseman also named Steve Smith
[4]. He is currently found at
Steve Smith (hockey) though I will hopefully find a better name for that page soon as it in no way disambiguates him from the topic of this page.

This article was almost completely devoted to the own goal scored in 1986, which I don't believe was/is fair to Mr. Smith. I mean, he had a pretty good career and I don't think this one unfortunate incident should be the only think you hear about when his name comes up. -- Freshfighter9 ( talk) 18:54, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Despite this infamous incident, he became one of the best defensemen in the league
This is a pretty questionable assertion. Any support for this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.73.73.91 ( talk) 05:41, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Here's the deal: there are two people by name of "Steve Smith" who have played in the NHL. Both were defencemen, both have Canadian citizenship, both played for multiple teams, and both were born in 1963. The main difference is that this one was born in Scotland. I previously had the page at Steve Smith (British-born ice hockey player), but it was moved to its current name. The current name mentions that he was a defencemen and born in 1963, but these facts do not disambiguate him from the other guy. The previous name was shorter and we should strive to keep it as snappy as possible when we disambiguate. Snocrates 06:32, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Per WP:COMMONNAME, I'm not too sure if the current title is going to work - as a reader, it took unnecessary navigating to get to this page - maybe something Steve Smith (assistant coach) could work? Any other ideas? Connormah ( talk) 01:42, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
Who the heck is "James Stephen Smith"? I've never heard of him. Dolovis ( talk) 04:01, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
Picture this: You need to look up the Steve Smith that scored on his own net against the Calgary Flames in ’86. You look up Steve Smith, but, you didn’t know that his full name was James Stephen Smith, and you get that guy that played for the Sabres, Flyers, and whatnot. Besides, the Smith that scored into his own net is more universally known, but the other Smith shouldn’t be left out. So, I’m proposing a change. Oiler, Flame, Blackhawk defenseman: Steve Smith (ice hockey b. Apr. 30, 1963) Flyer, Sabre defenseman: Steve Smith (ice hockey b. Apr. 4, 1963) Looking up “Steve Smith (ice hockey) would lead you to a fancy disambiguation page with the two Smiths on it. So, what do you say? MTG1989 ( talk) 00:54, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

This IS the Steve Smith that scored the own goal in the 1986 playoffs, no? This is an extremely notorious moment in hockey history, and the fact it was taken out of the page makes absolutely no sense. The amount of results from numerous media when googling "Steve Smith own goal" is astonishing, and it definitely does a disservice to the page to overlook this moment in history.
