That's a fair question and it seems awkward to me without "the". Based on the NRHP nomination form (
here), it's consistently listed without "the" and multiple times as simply "St. John" so it appears to be or have been a Baptist denomination. The current church website does indeed add "the" though so I've left your article move in place since that's sound but updated the NRHP infobox to reflect the name it was listed under. -
