Hi guys, there is a new issue raised at Blackhat Europe 2006, beginning of this mounth (March), about Skype security. The presentation confirmed Skype security is based on obscurity. It was quite a shock. The guy invested a lot of time and effort in this, reverse engineering the application and the protocol. I would appreciate your comments on how this information from the presentation can be implemented in this page. Here is a URL and the PDF for the presentation to help explain what I mean: http://blogs.securiteam.com/index.php/archives/355 http://www.blackhat.com/presentations/bh-europe-06/bh-eu-06-biondi/bh-eu-06-biondi-up.pdf
I don't understand the comment in the "Criticisms" section of the Skype article that says: "Lack of privacy (Skype has the keys to decrypt sessions)" ... How does one access these keys? Does this imply that someone has discovered how to extract keys from the binary? If no-one can explain this bullet point in more detail, I would like it removed. Qole 22:37, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
I placed the NPOV tag on the article because it focuses rather heavily on criticizing Skype for being proprietary and on concerns about its security. Security has recently been mentioned in the archive, so I'll just talk about the proprietary part. The article mentions "proprietary" 7 times, 6 of which are to explicitly criticize Skype for using a particular software development model. The article should not be used to hammer a particular point of view about the drawbacks of propriety software.
Just to get things started, I removed the "proprietary" in the introduction. The reader will find out in no short time that the software is not open source, and I don't feel it is of prime importance in a world view of skype. Mbelisle 07:25, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

The article in general is rather negative and unreasonably critical. For example Skype may have had perfectly valid reasons for choosing a "proprietary" protocol such as flexibility, or to have the freedom to design something that works well, etc. I don't know why everybody always has to assume the worst (is the world getting more and more paranoid and everyone just so critical for the sake of having something to say?). Their decisions may well have been for our benefit. 85.177.199.178 07:55, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

In recent days, I have heard people talking about 'skipe'/'skype' phones and I have no idea what they are. I thought that Wikipedia might help but alas no. This definition is terribly technical and doesn't tell me what one of these things does, how someone might use it etc. It would be good if someone in the know could explain what having a skipe phone would do for the user, where does one get them, are they expensive, how/where do you plug them in, what do they look like, what are the differences/advantages over other phones etc.

Image:Skype logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. I amended the article to state that Skype calls to UK landlines were free. This was an unwarranted generalisation; when I signed up I had a message at the bottom of the Skype screen inviting me to enter a UK landline number to make a free call. But this must either have been a limited-time promotion, or a few free calls to a new user. After making 3 free calls I can make no more (I have not subscribed to SkypeOut). So my amendment was wrong. If it is the case that new users get a few free SkypeOut calls, maybe somebody will amend the article accordingly? I don't have good information (and now realise that the invitation to make free calls was strictly limited). I haven't logged in for ages (was spending too much time on Wikipedia), so will sign with my permanent IP address. 213.208.107.91 ( talk) 00:41, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

In the alternatives section, I would like to see the company Mobivox (where I am an employee) mentioned. Currently there is no article on this Mobile VoIP company, though I have draft on my User:David.a.gelman/Mobivox Draft user page. Since Mobivox is a Skype competitor, it should be mentioned along with the other competitors. —Preceding comment was added at 14:14, 12 March 2008 (UTC) David.a.gelman ( talk) 20:58, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
