I added in this page since the Telecommunications wikiproject was requesting a submission. I included a brief generic explanation and then further detail on the service layer from an IMS perspective.
This article would benefit from a section about the service layer in C7 and CAMEL also.
Most of the information in the article is available in the 3GPP specification TS 23.228, however the specification does not really refer to this as 'layers', it is more concerned with the interface boundaries and protocols of the various IMS elements.

The section Service layer in SOA describes a particular kind of service layer in an SOA whereas the Service Layers Pattern provides guidelines for creating multiple service layers according to different functional contexts, hence does not seem right to merge Service Layers Pattern with the Service Layer.
