I have just scratched the surface on what the data sources could be mined for. A better description of the boating incident can be found at the Otago link. I will leave my contribution at that for now, and let others go ahead and see what else could be gleaned.

This from the Athletic News 21 Aug 1888: 'The deceased's full name was Robert Seddon. He only assumed the second Christian name Lever [not Lionel] to distinguish him from two other Robert Seddons, who were playing football at the same time in Manchester...born on October 21st, 1860.' Cris Freddi. — Preceding
