When I created the Popeye the Sailor (Warner DVD series) article, I shifted the material which cover the entire series from the previous individual volumes to that article including most of the background section original from Popeye the Sailor: 1933-1938, Volume 1. Now the background sections of each individual volume cover the time period covered in those DVD volumes. Volume 3 has to be the most complicated background section yet due to the transition from Fleischer Studios to Famous Studios producing the Popeye cartoons. If anyone can improve upon the background section of each volume, feel free to do so. Steelbeard1 ( talk) 17:35, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
With the deletion of the background section, significant info about certain cartoons in this collection also got deleted. Specifically, I'm referring to the two transitional Popeye cartoons from 1942 which, while official Famous cartoons, are not legally Famous cartoons as the company hadn't been formally organized yet. The two cartoons are "You're a Sap, Mr. Jap" and "Alona on the Sarong Seas" which do not bear Fleischer's name but do not bear the Famous Studios name. There was a citation supporting the info from http://www.cartoonbrew.com There should also be material about the wartime cartoons, many of which contain politically incorrect stereotypes necessitating a disclaimer at the start of each disc about the unacceptable stereotypes. We are waiting for the DVD listings to be released before we list the cartoons in this set so we can determine which cartoons are on which disc and also see what bonus material is on each disc. Those who wish to see what the cartoons are in this set can easily figure out from the "See also" links that these cartoons are the remaining black and white Popeye cartoons released to theaters from 1941 to 1943. During the Famous Studios black and white era, a sailor character, short both in stature and longivity, was created for the Popeye cartoons named Shorty who was Popeye's navy pal. Voiced by Arnold Stang who looked like Shorty, this annoying character was permanently retired shortly after the Popeye series converted to color. Stang is more famous at Famous Studios as the voice of Herman the Mouse, of course. Should the Shorty character be mentioned in this article or in the forthcoming Volume 4 article?
