A previous editor refers to Pakualaman as a 'Duchy', which in my view is incorrect and anachronistic. Traditionally, English and Dutch writers have always referred to successive rulers of Pakualaman as 'Princes'. [1] [2] A 'duke' in the British sense is a nobleman who lacks the attribute of sovereignty, so it would be more accurate to describe the ruler of Pakualaman as a 'native prince'.
