Nirit Ben-Aryeh Debby was born in Haifa in 1967. She received her B.A. (cum laude, 1991) in History and English and a M.A. in History (summa cum laude, 1993) from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She earned her Ph.D. from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1999). The title of her Ph.D. thesis was "Giovanni Dominici and Bernardino da Siena: Preaching in Renissance Florence." Her research, conducted under the supervision of Prof. Benjamin Z. Kedar and Prof. Riccardo Fubini from Florence University focuses on Dominican and Franciscan preachers and analyzes literary sources, particularly sermons. Ben-Aryeh Debby spent a year of post- doctoral studies at Harvard University and had won the Yad Handiv Fellowship from the Rothschild Foundation. She lives in Mevasseret Zion, Israel, is married to Oved and is the mother of Noam, Guy and Inbal.
Academic career
Ben-Aryeh Debby joined the Arts Department at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in 2004 and had won an Alon Fellowship. In 2007 she was promoted at the rank of Senior Lecturer. She was granted tenure in 2008, promoted to Associate Professor in 2013 and to Full Professor in 2016. At Ben Gurion University she won the Toronto Prize (2005) and the Rich Prize (2009). She received awards for excellence in teaching in 2004, 2006, and 2015. Between 2009 and 2011 and from 2015 she served as Chair of the Arts Department at Ben- Gurion University.
