National Beef is the nation’s fourth largest beef processor with sales exceeding $7 billion annually. National Beef operates the largest wet blue tannery in the world.1 Wet blue tanning refers to the first step in processing raw and brine-cured hides into tanned leader. From this facility in St. Joseph, MO, National Beef provides processed hides to finished leather processors worldwide for use in the automotive, luxury goods, apparel and furniture industries.
National Beef uses the BioLogic Food Safety System, a fully integrated system that includes training employees, interventions, a zone system and control and assessment functions.2,8 The company has also adopted the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) audit criteria, a set of international food safety and quality standards. National Beef achieved accreditation through third party auditing by the British Retail Consortium (BRC). [17]
National Beef has donated or supported organizations in the communities where their business resides. They are a Community Partner to Lyric Opera of Kansas City9, a donor to Kansas Children’s Service League10, and a 2014 Sponsor of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)—an organization that provides peer-based emotional support, grief and trauma resources to those who have been affected by a death in the Armed Forces.11 The company also supported military troops by sponsoring food for a “Saluting Our Troops” event in Dodge City, KS.12 National Beef and its employees participate in United Way campaigns in both Seward County and Moultrie, GA through donations and food sponsorships. Between the years of 1991 and 1994, several accidental and unrelated employee deaths occurred. The company faced legal prosecution and the cases were resolved in settlements. [21], [22], [23]
In June 2013, the company recalled nearly 23,000 pounds of ground beef ground beef for a possible E. coli contamination. On August 1, 2013, the company recalled 50,000 pounds of ground beef products because of possible E. coli contamination. [24] [25] All recalls were voluntary, and no illnesses were reported. Under the Branded Box Beef section, National Beef no longer offers Certified Premium Beef brand. However, the company did introduce HyPlains Heritage Farms brand in 2018. Propose updating the Branded Box Beef section to read as follows (updated copy in bold, sourcing included below):
