American English, which has its own spelling conventions (color, defense, traveled) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other
varieties of English. According to the
relevant style guide, this should not be changed without
broad consensus.
The
contentious topics procedure applies to this page. This page is related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, which has been
designated as a contentious topic.
This article should adhere to the gender identity guideline because it contains material about one or more
trans women. Precedence should be given to self-designation as reported in the most up-to-date reliable sources, anywhere in article space, even when it doesn't match what's most common in reliable sources. Any person whose gender might be questioned should be referred to by the pronouns, possessive adjectives, and gendered nouns (for example "man/woman", "waiter/waitress", "chairman/chairwoman") that reflect that person's latest expressed gender self-identification. Some people go by
singular they pronouns, which are acceptable for use in articles. This applies in references to any phase of that person's life, unless the subject has indicated a preference otherwise. Former, pre-transition names may only be included if the person was notable while using the name; outside of the main biographical article, such names should only appear once, in a footnote or parentheses. If material violating this guideline is repeatedly inserted, or if there are other related issues, please report the issue to the LGBT WikiProject, or, in the case of living people, to the BLP noticeboard.

According to a friend of hers, Monica Roberts passed away on Monday of this week (
here's the Facebook post). No other information seems to be available at this time.

Michael Keith Roberts was born May 4, 1962, his parents were Claude Roberts and Mable Jewel Atkins. This information is available in the Texas Birth Index on ancestry.com. This is probably the same person as Monica Roberts. — Preceding

Roberts did not become notable until after her gender transition, so her birth name (
deadname) should not be included in the article per
Wikipedia policy.

Ethnicity in the lead sentence
I removed this and it was restored. Is the subjects ethnicity relevant to their notability per
MOS:ETHNICITY? I would leave it out.--

I would argue it is, as Roberts is notable for her advocacy concerning African-American transgender women.

Looking at the edit history, I see that like there was initially uncertainty over the cause of death, there were edits changing her date of death back and forth between October
6th and the
5th, so I looked into it, and am noting my findings here for the record. Although a few sources like
OutSmart (despite itself being Houston-based!) have October 6th (as of when I'm writing this comment, anyway), and several avoid the uncertainty by just saying "in October", I see that local Houston media
KPRC, citing local authorities, has the 5th, as does the
New York Times, so I infer the 5th is more likely to be correct.
