The article says "The atoll has three airstrips", but the map clearly shows six airstrips. What gives? Dominus 04:25 26 May 2003 (UTC)
The map shows two - so we still have a mystery to resolve. Tannin
Yes, I agree, two are shown. An airstrip can have many runways. New point. Name "Midway Islands" is incorect. It is Midway Atoll. Marshman
As a former resident of Midway, I can tell you that it has only one usable runway. The north-south runway on the main island was closed many years ago. It was closed in 1974/75 when I was stationed there. All runways on Eastern Island were abandoned even earlier. As far as "Island" or "Atoll", it is simply currently politically correct to call it an Atoll now. Back in the 70's, we knew it only as "Midway Island". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gedstrom ( talk • contribs) 17:33, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
What is the climate of the Midway Islands? Given that it is located around 28 degrees N, I wouldn't be surprised if it were similar to a Mediterranean climate, like that of northern Baja California. I know it gets heavy winter rains, but I'm assuming the summers would be dry/rainless. Anybody know if there are detailed climate stats out there? And if so, can we add them to the Geography section? 207.216.49.234 20:50, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Midway Atoll does seem to be the official name of the place, so good move. However, the three islands are called islands in most places, including the US F&W page and the CIA factbook, every historical reference I've ever seen to the Battle of Midway also calls them islands. "Islets" may be technically correct, but it's not used here. In addition, you need to distinguish between Sand Islet and Sand Island. By renaming them all to islets, you just eliminated one of them! Basically, you can't go around renaming islands to islets because you think they're too small. ;-) Daniel Quinlan 06:23, Aug 3, 2003 (UTC)
Yes, I am well aware of the problem, which is why I left them without "islet" or "Island" (..three islets: Eastern, Sand,...). But you are right. It is a detail of geography that creates difficulty no matter which way one goes, and certainly these atoll islets (especially if habitable) are called islands most everywhere. Marshman 17:35, 3 Aug 2003 (UTC)
The whole "islet" / "island" thing results in some strange conflicts. Under Hawaiian Islands someone had stated that there are 137 islands in the archipelago. That may be true if every sandbar and offshore rock are counted. But the question "How many islands are there in the Hawaiian Islands?" seems likely NOT to want this answer, but one that results in the reasonable answer of 18. Still, greater problems arise by trying to officially rename all of those other features "islets" Marshman 19:09, 3 Aug 2003 (UTC)
there is a left-over repitition about the battle...
I'm confused by the recent page history - hasn't this been "Midway Atoll" for quite some time??

There seems to be confusion about the naming of this page. All authoritative sources use "Midway Islands": cf. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Encyclopædia Britannica, Dictionary.com, CIA - The World Factbook. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uses the complete phrase "Midway Atoll" only as a shortening of "Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge". P æ dia 17:55, 2004 Jul 13 (UTC)

The OIA seems confused, by a third usage "Midway Island", and using " Wake Island" and "Wake Atoll" interchangeably, which I have also never seen used. What you are saying is that the OIA has authority to (re)name insular areas at will, which the CIA, FWS, and authoritative resources do not recognise? P æ dia 21:32, 2004 Jul 13 (UTC)
I'm running a vote to see if people want to add an interesting tidbit about a reference to a game. In the game Ace Combat 5, the main protagonists are stationed on "Sand Island", a nice tropical place modeled after Midway, with the only change being a rather large island with a mountain in the north-east. The amazing thing is that every little detail, down to the tiny peninsula in the south of Sand Island to the runways, the reefs and even the dock is modeled exactly after Midway. So, shall we accept this tidbit? - RPharazon 01:26, 23 Jul 2005
This article contradicts the Hawaiian Islands article. The Islands article says the Leeward Islands are part of the state of Hawaii -- including Midway. However this article says Midway is unincorporated territory. So which is correct? 23skidoo 20:37, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
It seems as though the gov't wants to open it up for tourism again:

"The Interim Visitor Services Plan for Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, the Battle of Midway Memorial, and Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument’s Midway Atoll Special Management Area was approved on May 23, 2007. It provides for a small visitor program, probably beginning in 2008.
The Fish and Wildlife Service is now working with a variety of entities who have expressed interest in bringing guided groups to Midway Atoll. If you are interested in sponsoring a group visit to Midway, please contact us at midway@fws.gov. We will also offer opportunities for individuals to come independent of guided tours in 2008. As our schedule of visitor opportunities is developed, we will post it on our website.
The approved plan and its appendices may be downloaded via the links below. We are now turning our attention to plan implementation, including hiring additional staff to support the visitor program. Thank you for your continued patience as we work to make Midway Atoll more available for visitation!" 218.215.9.28 ( talk) 13:42, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
I am working on a section about the environment, specifically about marine debris, washing up on the shores, and the damage to the albatross population.
I will move the bird info from Geography and Geology section to a new Wildlife section. If anybody objects, please revert and tell me to butt out. Thanks!
If anybody wishes to contrib and expand this bit, please do. See also Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and Kamilo Beach -- Anna Frodesiak ( talk) 06:02, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

I've removed the photo (at right) that purports to show a lava flow exposed on the Midway shoreline from the article, since the lava underlying the atoll has been found to lie hundreds of feet underground. [3] -- Avenue ( talk) 08:17, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
According to official list “Dependencies and Areas of Special Sovereignty” published by the Department of State correct name is ‘Midway Islands’ [4]. According to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names official name is ‘Midway Islands’ [5], [6], and name ‘Midway Atoll’ is only variant name (as well as is used as part of name of Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge). So, article should be moved to official name ‘Midway Islands’. Aotearoa ( talk) 08:15, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

No Wiki reference to Sand Island or Eastern Island. In light of rising sea levels of global warming it might be enlightening to list the height above sea level. The WWII Battle of Midway info (not in Wiki) lists the highest point on the Eastern Island with the Airbase was 12 feet above sea level, and Sand Island was 15 feet above sea level. Also the area figures: they show "atoll" smaller than "lagoon" which doesn't sound right. Shjacks45 ( talk) 00:10, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
I was there twice in '72 on a Knox-class frigate on the way out and again on the way back, both for refueling. I never got ashore, but I do remember that the highest part of our ship was higher than the highest part of the island. JDZeff ( talk) 23:16, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
Is there any historic reason why Midway was never part of the state of Hawaii? If there is a specific reason it might be worth adding it to the article... Grutness... wha? 05:27, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

B-class article approaching Good-article status (I would think). Geology and WWII/pre-WWII history is great. I would like to see, however, more history from WWII to the present. What is life like now, to the few who still live and work here? Give more details about the eco-tourism thing initaited recently. Also crucially important is an ecology section, which this article doesn't have, despite Midway being one of the key breeding grounds for many seabirds, including the Laysan Albatross, of which millions flock each year to hatch and raise their young.
