In the wake of Michael's death, this page is undergoing a major overhaul to reflect the significant contributions he made to the fields of family therapy and community work. Many close colleauges and practitioners from around the world will be invovled in this process - please have patience while we add key information and make this page far more useful! If you have any questions or comments about anything we add - or if there's any information you'd like to see here - please feel free to add to this talk page. It seems unclear when Michael died. It has alternately been posted, in Wikipedia previously, as in other places, notably his own Adelaide Centre, As April 4. Perhaps the problem is the international dateline. Did he die April 4 San Diego time, April 5 Adelaide time? My assumption would be that the time of death is reported as the time where it happened (in San Diego) not the time where he lived (Adelaide). Perhaps there is a standard. Perhaps it should be specified he died April 4 San Diego time April 5 Adelaide time. ( John Lederman ( talk) 13:39, 21 June 2008 (UTC)) John Lederman

Please explain more about Gregory Bateson. (comment placed in article moved here by Dwalls ( talk) 14:08, 10 December 2009 (UTC))
Bateson was quoted in Michael White's early writings inspired by cybernetic ideas, but White still quoted him when his interests turned to narrative: there is a discussion of Bateson's ideas about understanding and interpretation of reality, 'news of a difference', the importance of the temporal dimension, and differentiation in both White and Eptson's 'Narrative means to therapeutic ends' (1990), as well as White's landmark 2001 paper 'Folk psychology and narrative practice'. While much of Bateson's ideas do not fit with narrative practice as it evolved, and he is not engaged with by most narrative writers today, in 2007, White said that one of his upcoming reserach projects was to re-read Bateson's work, and re-engage with it in the cotext of his thinking at the time, especially around ideas of differentiation, as drawn from Derrida, and the realtionship of thought and knowledge, as drawn on White's reading at the time of Deleuze.
