@ Epicgenius does the April 23, 1961 article from the New York Herald Tribune say the original shopping center had 12 stories? I wasn't sure if this was a typo and supposed to be 12 stores or 1-2 stories; I don't have access to this newspaper so I couldn't check it myself. It looks like the shopping center might have only been 1 or 2 stories tall based on the photos and sketches on the Kips Bay Plaza project page from Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and a 1966 photo of Kips Bay Plaza from Second Avenue that shows the shopping center from the Museum of the City of New York.
