Five important explanations about the article:
PD: I apologize if I made a grammatical mistake. I'm not an English-speaker (I'm from Argentina). Thanks.
Israel also counts as a victim of terror every Israeli citizen killed in a terrorist attack against their embassies or diplomatic representation abroad. However, I don't know if Israeli authorities count also an Israeli killed in foreign soil whose assassination has nothing to do with his Israeli or Jewish identity: for example, an Israeli tourist man killed by stabbing during a robbery in Bolivia. [6]-- 190.16.232.216 ( talk) 03:11, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
What about Mossad agents killed abroad during an operation? I'm sure that there are a few cases... Maybe Mossad's Web page says something about it. There must be some way to find this information, for example, I read a book (Victor Ostrovsky's By way of deception which explains at least two cases of Mossad agents killed in Europe).-- 190.16.232.216 ( talk) 02:27, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
Why is this included? This article states it is about casualties Israel has suffered during war, and these deaths occurred before the State of Israel was established. 188.221.145.66 ( talk) 08:47, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
It seems that Israel considers inside those 24,293 dead people all the thousands of security forces members who died by traffic or work accidents and disabled veterans whose disabilities contributed to their deaths. [7] It is a strange criteria... for example, if we applied this conception in Argentina, more than 1,500 people would be honored as fallen soldiers of Falklands war, because the number of veterans who died from their wounds or suicide for their war's traumas (and the complete abandon of their nation) are much higher than all 649 soldiers killed by the British during the 1982 war. I guess something similar would happen with many veterans of Vietnam war who died on American soil. Any way, the Israeli authorities have their methods and I'm nobody to judge them.-- 190.16.232.216 ( talk) 03:33, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
And that does not include the 500+ killed in massacres prior to the riots, or those killed fighting for the british, etc. Wikifan12345 ( talk) 03:53, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
How on earth is this not biased? The page is littered with deeper explainations on the Israeli casualities and there are dozens of pictures of Israeli massacres, which is pretty bloated by itself, but there is no mention of Palestinian deaths. And who makes a list of casualities for a side in a conflict, anyway? 92.0.155.113 ( talk) 22:31, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs counted 2,500 Israelis dead between 1920 and 1999,
[14] and over 1,000 dead since the 2000 Second Intifada outbreak. The statement more than 3,500 Israelis have been killed and 25,000 have been wounded as a result of Palestinian violence since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 is incorrect, because it's including all the pre-state victims. In any case, it should say more than 3,500 Israelis have been killed and 25,000 have been wounded as a result of Palestinian violence since 1920. Let see those numbers:
Year | Terrorism deaths in Israel |
---|---|
1920 | 9 |
1921 | 24 |
1922 | 5 |
1923 | 0 |

1936 | 44 |
1937 | 10 |

1943 | 1 |
1944 | 3 |
1945 | 1 |
1946 | 28 |
1947 | 152 |
1940s total (excluding 1948-49) | 340 |
1920-47 total | 685 |
This means that - if 2,500 people were killed between 1920 and 1999, and 685 were killed between 1920 and 1947 (before Israel's establishment) - only 1,815 people were killed since 1948. If we add those 1,188 people killed by Palestinians between 2000 and 2010, we have 3,003 killed, not 3,500. As simple as that.
On the other hand, the sentence is incorrect because, although most of those 2,500 people were killed by Palestinian terrorists, many of them were killed by enemies of other nationalities (like British or Egyptian soldiers, for example) and even during World War II (all 137 people killed in 1940 perished during an Italian bombing attack in Tel Aviv on September). Indeed, the Israeli Ministry specified that a total of 2,500 residents of Mandatory Palestine and, since 1948, the State of Israel fell victims to hostile enemy action; in most cases, terrorist attacks (not only Palestinian violence). We should change that too.-- 190.16.232.216 ( talk) 07:30, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
The "967 killed" is characterized by a prestigious historian like Benny Morris as a "pure nonsense" number, because Gilbert's fatality figures are apparently "3-5 times higher than the figures given in contemporary Israeli reports" and they seem to be based on a 1956 speech by David Ben-Gurion in which he uses the word nifga'im to refer to "casualties" in the broad sense of the term (i.e. both dead and wounded). [15] The reference I wanted to add is from the Jewish Agency and it's imprecise, but I suggest that Gilbert's source be changed for another more reliable.-- 190.16.232.216 ( talk) 03:53, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
Wikifan12345 has added figures for the number of foiled suicide bombing attacks per year based on data from Jewish Virtual Library ( [3]), a source that has been repeatedly criticized as a biased in favour of Israel at WP:RSN, and the "Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center at the Israel Intelligence Heritage & Commemoration Center" ( [4] page 55), which seems to be an Israeli government-funded public diplomacy center.
At first glance, both of these sources are obviously anti-Palestinian and as such it would be in their interests to exaggerate the number of foiled attacks to make the Palestinians appear more violent and less peaceful than they actually are.
But that doesn't matter, because their figures are completely different!
Number of reported foiled attacks by year and source:
Year | Foiled attacks per Jewish Virtual Library | Foiled attacks per Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center at the Israel Intelligence Heritage & Commemoration Center page 55 | Difference (as a percentage) |
---|---|---|---|
2001 | 56 | 20 | 180% |
2002 | 171 | 112 | 52% |
2003 | 209 | 184 | 13.5% |
2004 | 367 | 119 | 208% |
2005 | 96 | 15 | 540% |
2006 | 187 | 71 | 163% |
As you can see for yourself, these two sources give completely different figures -- 540% differences for one year.
This shows that both sources are so unreliable, their figures don't even basically match up and they can't be trusted. The figures should be removed from the article until proven reliable sources can be found. And any more data on foiled attacks should be carefully scrutinized since it is obviously being fabricated for propaganda reasons by some parties.
Regardless, this article is supposed to be about Israeli casualties anyway, and I don't see what foiled attacks have to do with casualties - by definition a foiled attack can't produce any casualties!
The information on the foiled plots is both irrelevant and completely unreliable. Removing it from this article is a no-brainer.

Why are terrorist attacks only listed between these dates?
It should be from at least 1920 til present. The 1929 Chebron Masacre for example, or the Ben Yehuda bulldozer plots in 2009.
This article should also list murders; such as Syrian sniper attacks on farmers in the Golan (pre 1967) and people like Samir Kuntar.

Israeli casualties of war → Israeli deaths and injuries due to armed conflict and terrorist attacks —
The content of the article extends far beyond casualties of war. Significant parts of the content refer to casualties of armed conflict, other parts refer to victims of terrorist attacks. While Israel may regard these as acts of war, this view is not shared by the majority of reliable sources (nor by the UN and most other countries, for that matter). As an alternative, the article may be split into different articles which are more focused on their respective topics. Cs32en Talk to me 15:58, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
All the casualties take place in what is referred to as the greater "Arab-Israeli conflict." Casualties does not necessarily = fatalities, and can include injuries, or perhaps even "shock" though that could be debated. I suggest a re-direct. The Israeli government counts casualties all the way back to 1860, and does not differentiate between conventional warfare and terrorism. Wikifan12345 ( talk) 23:30, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
An editor has changed a section title from "Palestian political violence" to "Palestinian violence". This refers to attacks against Israeli soldiers in the Occupied territories. The editor argues that these attacks are terrorism, and thus not political. I suggest to restore "Palestinian political violence" for the following reasons:
1) Even if the attacks could be neutrally described as terrorism, they would still be political violence, as terrorism is inherently political.
2) While one side describes the attacks as terrorist, the other side says they are a legitimate defense against occupation. Therefore, referring to them as terrorism would not be a neutral description.
3) Leaving out the word "political" would create the impression that this would be about all kinds of violence, for example Israeli soldiers killed in the crossfire between warring Palestinian drug cartels. However, this is not about criminal violence, but political violence.

The gang was revealed during the investigation into the murder of Yosef Yacobi and his 8 year old son David on December 22 1932 in Nahalal. Rabbi Avraham Shlomo Zalman Zoref was killed in 1851. He was struck by a sword wielding Arab and mortally wounded over having reclaimed the
court of the Hurva for the Ashkenazi congregation. The injury left him paralyzed, and he died a few days later on the 19th Elul 5611. His grave in the Kidron Valley (now in
the corridor behind the
Tomb of Zechariah) was destroyed under the Jordanian occupation and restored by his descendants. Zoref's identification as the first casualty isn't recent.
This 1948 article in
Davar by historian Gezel Kressel identified Zoref "among the first victims of the yishuv on the altar of its restoration and revival." He was born in Lithuania and migrated to Palestine in 5571 (1811, according to the 1839 Montefiore census). He was also
among the first Ashkenazi Jews (article by historian Pinhas Grayevsky) to settle in Jerusalem after the congregation was banned in 1721, and instrumental in lifting said ban.
Here is his memorial page on the Israeli memorial website for victims of terrorism. According to his page, he is also commemorated on "Table 1"
of the memorial monument on Mount Herzl, which lists victims of terrorism between 1851 and 1919. Bottom line is, the Israeli government commemorates casualties starting 1851 - not 1860 as the article currently reads and
contrary to its own statement in some cases. --

Concerns have been raised by uninvolved editors regarding the use of Jewish Virtual Library. Wikifan, I suggest that you take specific pages that you want to use to RS/N in the future and that you move to have the sources you are using now either confirmed at RS/N or find better sourcing. Unomi ( talk) 20:48, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Since when were attacks on diplomatic missions 'casualities of war?' By that logic the Holocaust is an act of war. Also, I propose the removal of the memorial gallery. The article is also very biased compared to this one. SGeography ( talk) 17:19, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

What's with the on-duty military deaths being declared "civilian" by Israel? It doesn't matter how much Israel shouts and screams, it doesn't magically make POW's "kidnap victims" or on-duty soldiers killed by rockets to be "civilian deaths". 124.169.165.67 ( talk) 10:40, 28 December 2011 (UTC) Sutter Cane

Izz ad-Din al-Qassam's gang carried out several attacks against Jews during the early 1930's. The gang was revealed during the investigation into the murder of Yosef Yacobi and his 8 year old son David on December 22 1932 in Nahalal. At least five other cases of murder in the years 1931-1933 were tied with this gang.-- ארינמל ( talk) 04:51, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

Benny Gantz is currently the leader of the Israeli parliamentary opposition. His photo in this context is inevitably a political statement in Israel and should be replaced with a neutral depiction of a ceremony or at least one with a general who is not currently involved in politics, or removed altogether.
