Millimetres thick?

In the caption to the second image, what does it mean to say that the polish is millimetres thick? Unless there has been some chemical alteration of the rock and the process does not imply that, then it effectively has no thickness, it is simply the smooth nature of the surface itself. cheers Geopersona ( talk) 19:54, 10 January 2017 (UTC) reply
