Origins?

Can someone post information to indicate the origin of this song? Is it in the public domain? -- Bistropha ( talk) 18:15, 15 April 2017 (UTC) reply

I think it's safe to assume that it's in the public domain. It goes back to at least prior to 1923. Probably much further back. However, I agree we *really* need something on it's origin on this page. I suspect that the origin does not actually reflect some of the things being currently said about it. Alligator origins

@ Theleekycauldron: The source cited for "Origins" ( https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2020/06/19/holly-richardson-old/) quotes a lyric of "Five little monkeys, swinging in a tree, teasing Mr. Alligator, ‘‘Can’t catch me, you can’t catch me!‘" - is this a variant (perhaps an earlier, unsanitised version) of the same song, or another song that happens to be about five monkeys? -- Lord Belbury ( talk) 12:41, 17 March 2021 (UTC) reply

@ Lord Belbury: I think either one of us making that call is WP:SYNTH– it doesn't explicitly reference this nursery rhyme, and it's probably better to just omit rather than risk an inaccuracy. theleekycauldron ( talkcontribs) ( they/them) 17:23, 17 March 2021 (UTC) reply
There may be a source that links them, but from the looks of it they are two distinct songs. I'll remove the section. -- Lord Belbury ( talk) 12:07, 18 March 2021 (UTC) reply
