As I understand it, this "surname" is a internet genealogy thing. There is this chain of reasoning: her father was a son of a brother of Bishop Chrodegang of Metz, and that bishop's parents were described as nobility from Hesbaye. This article says Ranulf is the grandson of Louis & Ermengarde by a "Rotrude", but other pages say he's the grandson of Pepin I (Ermengarde's son), by an unnamed mother. - JamesyWamesy ( talk) 18:48, 15 February 2021 (UTC) reply
