Is "duelling" a correct spelling? The article uses "dueling". RickK 05:10, 2 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Fine quality pistols were certainly sold in cased pairs with all the accoutrements. Of course, sometimes they were used for duels. But were they designed and marketed as "duelling pistols"? Surely they were just large pistols? OK, we read that they were designed with special features to make them reliable and accurate. As opposed to what? As opposed to the other pistols that weren't designed to be reliable and accurate? So if a gentleman was planning a journey, and wanted to be armed in case of highwaymen, he'd keep his 'duelling pistols' safely cased up, and go to his gunsmith to buy a pair of clumsy pistols for these non-duelling purposes? Good point about the hair trigger. Seems to me that since most people would go through life without ever fighting a duel, why would anyone spend big bucks on a pair of pistols just for duelling? Although - maybe if the word got out that you owned a nice pair of duellers, and regularly shot targets with them, that would discourage anyone from challenging you, or insulting you?
