I put this under gov-stub and asked for a split, but really, IMO, the dictdef on divan being a type of couch should just disappear or go to wiktionary. I don't quite see the purpose of it here unless someone wants to make an article on the history of divans... -- Jemiller226 18:42, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

1."divan Oriental council of state; court of justice, council chamber XVI; long seat against the wall of a room XVIII; smoking-room with lounges XIX. — F. divan or It. divano — Turk. divan — Pers. dīwān (orig.) brochure, (hence) account-book, office of accounts, court, council chamber, (cushioned) bench." ( T. F. HOAD. "divan." The Concise Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology. 1996. Encyclopedia.com. (April 7, 2010). http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1O27-divan.html )
2. Main Entry: di·van Pronunciation: \di-ˈvan, ˈdī-ˌvan, especially in senses 1, 2, & 4 also di-ˈvän, dī-ˈvan\ Function: noun Etymology: Turkish, from Persian dīvān account book ( http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/divan )
I'm going to change (Arabic دیوان) to (Persian دیوان). پسر بختیاری ( talk) 12:19, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
