The title makes a bold claim here, but according to the
Jewish Virtual Library, copied on
his father's wikipedia page, the family moved before 1589 to Venice. Either David was born earlier than 1591, he was born in Venice, or his family moved later away from Thessaloniki.

Actually according to Abraham David's
Encyclopaedia Judaica article which the JVL republished. I've changed the URL citation to that of
Encyclopedia.com but can't work out how to mention the EJ.
