Is it just me or has there been a conscious effort to mention afl as much as possible. Regular contribtors may have to pay attention. 144.132.216.253 15:25, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
I think we need to be careful about our use of the words "rugby league" and "rugby union" when talking about Dally Messenger's early history. The sport was the same until the Rugby Football Leagues started to change the rules of their game. Before the schism it wasn't called rugby union, it was just rugby football. It was run by organisations known as Rugby Football Unions. Before the organisations known as Rugby Football Leagues were created, there was nothing to differentiate between. I can't say exactly when the names 'rugby union' and 'rugby league' began to be applied to the sports themselves in Australia. I think it would have been after the Rugby Football Leagues changed some rules and became more established. The New South Wales Rugby Football League only changed it's name to the New South Wales Rugby League in 1984. In the rugby league heartlands of England, they still refer to league as just 'rugby' even today. I don't think it's correct to say Dally Messenger played 'rugby union' initially. He played Rugby football (under an organising body that happened to be known as a Rugby Football Union). Just something to bear in mind.-- Jeff79 19:45, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Image:Herbert Henry Messenger.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BetacommandBot 22:56, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
I have classified the article as a start according to the WP Bio and WP Australia consistent with the rugby league classification. Capitalistroadster 05:42, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Can anyone provide any evidence that Messenger was approached by Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur? I've found mentions of such approaches on web forums, but I'm certain that was based on information read here, while any sources that seem reputable only make mention of interest from Spurs, but no mention of Man Utd or the value of the contract offer. – Pee Jay 18:22, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

There should be a Quensland Club to correspond with his time with the Queensland rep team in 1911 shouldn't there? The infobox gives the impression that he only ever played for one club. Also wondering about the pre-schism Eastern Suburbs RU team. Is there such a team? Perhaps it should be in the infobox too to correspond with the RU tests which are also absent and should be listed.-- Jeff79 ( talk) 14:44, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
This image is currently marked as non-free. Given that your man here died in 1959 aged 76, this seems most unlikely as he'd have to have been in his 70s when the picture was taken for the image not to be PD in Australia. Can someone knowledgeable check and update the license tag if appropriate? Maybe the kit he's wearing gives a clue as to the date? Many thanks, Angus McLellan (Talk) 17:18, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
