GaryColemanFan, although you have decided to abstain, would you not agree that the current text is a good compromise between those who want to say things like 'murderer' up front and those who want to say ' reported to have killed...', 'alleged to have killed...' etc'? Do you also not agree with the a objective principle that we should base what we say on the final result of the due legal process? Martin Hogbin ( talk) 12:40, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

I have full protected the article again, since the edit war has started again and is merrily on its way. If you feel discussion at the talk page will not bring about a suitable solution, please follow the dispute resolution process. I'm not familiar with the situation here, but it seems to me at first glance that there may be sockpuppets involved as well. Has anyone filed a sockpuppet investigation if this may be the case? (I'm not sure about this though; I'm merely saying it without checking the problem in detail) ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 01:59, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
I contributed a little bit early, but I left it alone after that. Is it possible that the edit war started because a vote wasn't taken? I realise that consensus isn't limited to voting per se, but if we can get two distinct versions settled upon and then put it to a vote - maybe we'll get somewhere without taking it to dispute resolution. Just putting that out there. Generally situations like this arise because of some vested interest in a particular POV - and that can happen on both sides. I'm not saying that's what's happened here, but if we can avoid a formal process I think all of us would be happier. !! Justa Punk !! 08:11, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Punk, I agree, I like votes, but i'm sure if we propose one, a user will point to the policy stating that voting does not indicate consensus. Personally, I disagree, but im for a vote. I agree with Martin, the current version was agreed upon. The only issue is how to prove a consensus, with such a lengthy dispute. Sephiroth storm ( talk) 17:39, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
This vote is to indicate consensus on the current version of the article, a support vote will indicate that you believe that the article as it stands is a fair attempt at a reasonable compromise of opposing viewpoints, is NPOV and is in accordance with Wikipedia policy. As an indicator of consensus, we will treat further disruption of the article in violation of the consensus established here, for support or not support, as a violation of consensus and disruption of wikipedia.
Support I believe the current article is encyclopedic in nature and presents all relevant information in a fair and balanced manner. Sephiroth storm ( talk) 12:38, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Support The current version is fine. CraigMonroe ( talk) 12:47, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
I have removed the full protection of this page, since consensus seems to be in favour of the current version and there were no recent objections. Please note that this "vote" is regarded as a summary of the discussions above on this matter, and not merely a poll to select one version. Also note that this is not an endorsement of one particular version; if any reasonable objections are raised in the future, the editors of this article should discuss about it to arrive at a suitable solution. And please do not resume edit warring; if an editor repeatedly tries to change the article to another version without discussion, consider warning them and reporting at WP:AN/EW instead of simply re-reverting. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 14:34, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

The article intro links to and describes Benoit as a "serial killer" which defines it as killing 3 or more over more than 30 days. Top paragraph contains the following line:
"This renders Benoit one of three men to have held both companies' incarnations of the belt, alongside Booker T and Bill Goldberg."
This is now inaccurate. He is one of five men to be considered a holder of both the wCw and WWF versions of the gold belt. Chris Jericho is recognized by WWE as the last wCw World Heavyweight Champion and has also held the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Kurt Angle is also recognized as having held both types of belts. See http://www.wwe.com/inside/titlehistory/wcwchampionship/ and http://www.wwe.com/inside/titlehistory/worldheavyweight/.
If the intention is to identify users who held the WCW title while WCW was still around, then the text is valid as-is, but should be further clarified as such, in which case I suggest the following alternate statement:
"This renders Benoit one of three men to have held the Big Gold Belt as champion in WCW and WWF/E, alongside Booker T and Bill Goldberg."

I won't deny that Benoit's actions are reprehensible, but there's absolutely no reason to delete this page. WWE may no longer acknowledge Benoit, but that's irrelevant here. Neither of the Ws in "WWE" stand for Wikipedia. Spartan198 ( talk) 05:47, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
This is a case I would fully support for damnatio memoriae. In fact, that is what the WWE has done. The problem is that the WWE still recognizes his title reigns (the pages for them on WWE.com are now just blanked). Since that is the case, blanking the page is, as abhorrent his actions are, probably and unfortunately not justified. -- Starcade ( talk) 23:30, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

One of the sentences in the leading section says Benoit last performed for WWE on their ECW brand. Paul Heyman, head of the original ECW promotion, intended to book Benoit to win the ECW World Heavyweight Championship in 1995 but did not renew his United States Work Visa in time; It may be more of a general wrestling question, but what does this mean? Is it wrestling speak for to appear in a final? Could the wording be clarified for the non-wrestling fan? Talltim ( talk) 13:10, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Is it really necessary to say that his "career and life ended in a murder–suicide"? Would we not assume that his career ended along with his life? I understand that it is intended for emphasis, but I would argue that a sentence ending 'murder-suicide' carries plenty of emphasis as and of itself, and suggest simply "...whose life ended in a murder–suicide." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Malchickles ( talk • contribs) 07:59, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

His two WWF Championship reigns should not be recognized by wikipedia as official reigns. WWE nor any credible wrestling source (to my knowledge) counts either of these reigns. Wikipedia doesn't recognize Jericho's WWF Championship victory over Triple H in 2000 or Dibiase's reign when he was handed the belt either. His reigns aren't even listed on the wiki page for list of WWE Champions. If this isn't fixed, then the List of WWE Champions page should be edited to match the information on this page. To date the only unofficial reign that page counts is Antonio Inoki's reign. Inoki legitimately won the belt however Backlund regained it before American audiences could notice. PWI actually recognizes this reign. Jericho, Dibiase, and both of Benoit's reigns that I mentioned were addressed officially by an on-air authority figure and made unofficial and have never been recognized since by anybody. It's disingenuous and inaccurate to attribute these to Benoit. They're worth mentioning in his career bio but not in the opener and not in his list of accomplishments. If I remember right, Benoit received two WWF heavyweight title opportunities in high-profile PPV matches. The first was at Fully Loaded 2000 against The Rock, and the second at Unforgiven 2000 in a fatal four-way against The Rock, Undertaker and Kane. I found it humorous (at the time, with my not being a fan of his) that in both matches Benoit seemingly won the title, only to be denied by commissioner Mick Foley deciding to restart the matches—both of which were eventually won by The Rock, heh. So anyway, I think these two matches should be added to the 2000–2001 section. What I'll do is wait around and let someone else with more interest in the subject matter do it within the next few weeks (I don't usually edit wrestling-based articles, so others may be able to gather up sources better than I can), but if it hasn't been added by then, I'll do it myself. Is it really necessary to include the fact that he was a murderer in the opening paragraph? He spent a very short period of his life as a 'murderer', and it being listed next to 'Canadian professional wrestler' implies that he did it often or throughout his life. Although of course the double murder and suicide should be mentioned in the opening, I disagree with the wording. G.O.R. 25 ( talk) 16:29, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
It is pointed out that his career and life ended he is not called 'Murderer'.Thats like focussing on one aspect of his life and he wasn't insane it must have been some kind of sadism that went over the edge this type of sadism was witnessed in many of his matches. His character was strange he never abused, never spoke, never let it out repressed yet with amazing wrestling potential interesting point is that anyone can make a site on him put a video tape of him and yet you can't prosecute not withstanding pressure of media sources. I want to add a full stop at the end of "professional wrestler" in the opening paragraph, as it separates the first sentence from the second. Kalzombieplays ( talk) 09:06, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
In the "Death" section there at the end of the second paragraph there is a [citation needed]. I believe I have found a couple potential citations which I will list: https://www.ewrestlingnews.com/articles/benoit-family-tragedy-explained-edited https://www.cnbc.com/id/19448064/ CBatteries ( talk) 17:34, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
"Benoit murdered his wife on June 22, 2007, his son on June 23, 2007, and hanged himself on June 24, 2007."
This should be changed to "Benoit allegedly murdered" or "Benoit killed." Murder is a specific criminal charge that one must be convicted of in a criminal trial. If no trial is possible because the alleged murderer has died before a trial can occur, then the correct terminology permanently remains "allegedly murdered." Alternatively, "killed" is a more general term that may be employed, as "killing" is not a specific criminal charge, but a general action.

14:10, 21 July 2020 (UTC)I noticed that in the mobile version of the article, there's no reference to his and his family's deaths in the shortened opening section. I think a lot of people read just that section when doing a of quick search on a topic, and it seems to me that having that not include anything but his career is somewhat disrespectful to his family (and to him I suppose, given the health issues believed to have contributed to the deaths). Is there a way to move the last paragraph of the opening up right below the first, and reformat the article so those two both appear above the table of contents in the mobile version of the article? JSLegere ( talk) 17:27, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
Just want to agree that the opening paragraph should mention the deaths. I see that one editor keeps adding it and it keeps getting reverted. If you check O. J. Simpson, or Oscar Pistorius, or plenty of other examples it is right to have it in the first paragraph. I understand that it is mentioned elsewhere in the article but it is the first paragraph that is mirrored all over the internet and shown on the mobile version. Even within Wikipedia, links to articles show a brief description and picture when you hover over the link and that brief description should contain the important facts. What keeps getting added is "...was a Canadian professional wrestler and murderer." which can probably be improved, to me it reads a little like he had two jobs. Also, he was never tried and convicted of murder but it should not just be reverted over and over. How about "...was a Canadian professional wrestler who killed his wife and child, before taking his own life." 78.156.65.189 ( talk) 02:30, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
I agree, this needs to be removed. Especially given the fact that it was a double murder suicide. In the "Death" section, the details of the murder-suicide are spelled out in the first paragraph. Then, the next paragraph immediately follows with how the WWE did a three-hour tribute to Benoit's life and career the day the deaths were discovered.
It seems to me that some important context is missing in that second paragraph. I believe it should be noted that at the time the WWE put together and broadcast the retrospective, it was not yet publicly known that Benoit had murdered his wife and child. The way that second paragraph is written, immediately after the details of the crime, could easily lead the reader to believe that the WWE knew that Benoit was a murderer when they aired the retrospective, which I do not believe was the case. I'd suggest starting off that second paragraph with some context of "The WWE, not yet knowing the circumstances of the crime...".

In the "Personal life" section it says "Benoit became good friends with fellow wrestler Eddie Guerrero following a match in Japan, when Benoit kicked Guerrero in the head and knocked him out cold. This started a friendship that lasted even after Guerrero's death in late 2005, in which Benoit had written diary entries to him just ten days after his passing. The content became precognition of Benoit's own demise.[109]" There is no such thing as precognition, it is made up and weird to put a sentence like that in a high-profile wikipedia article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2407:7000:9C8E:EC00:EC53:2BFB:B013:978D ( talk) 11:06, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

It would be best to state the plain fact of the discovery of the bodies in a sentence, followed by a sentence that states the conclusion of the authorities. Additional details should be moved to the proper sections.
he was booked to win a third world championship at a WWE event on the night of his death.also is out of place in the lede. Once the murder-suicide is summarized, the rest of the lede, save a very few sentences should be moved to other sections where it belongs.

Is it really necessary to say that his "career and life ended in a murder–suicide"? Would we not assume that his career ended along with his life? Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Technically, Chris Benoit won the WWF Title at Unforgiven 2000. Although, he was stripped of it seconds later by Mick Foley. But it still counts! Just how Daniel Bryan won at Summerslam and then lost to Randy Orton minutes later. In the third paragraph on the Chris Benoit article, please change the link of Benoit murdered his wife and son on June 22, 2007, and hanged himself two days later to Benoit murdered his wife on Friday June 22, 2007, his son on June 23, 2007, and hanged himself on June 24, 2007.
