Why does this need to be merged? -- FuriousFreddy 00:13, 25 May 2005 (UTC)
I tagged it as needing a merge, but whomever listed it as speedy delete and the admin who actually did it are completely ridiculous. When we merge a topic, the old one sticks around as redirect so as to not have someone recreate the old article with repetitive information yet again. But, more importantly, there was ABSOLUTELY NO APPLICABLE REASON to label this for a speedy delete and to erase it without a vote or discussion. This kind of arbitrary and nonsensical action is completely inappropriate. DreamGuy 01:35, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)
It cannot be redirected to popeye and can be expanded. The character predates popeye name of the strip.

I removed this: "Unlike Olive Oyl, Castor is an actual male name.". Olive Oyl isn't meant to be a male name - she's female, and Olive is a perfectly good female name. Unless I've missed a point somewhere. DJ Clayworth 21:01, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
From recent edits, there seems to be a difference of opinion as to if the article should be redirected. Please note that at present, the information here is NOT all duplicated at the " Popeye" article. Personally I'd tend to leave the article here; some people may think that newspaper cartoon characters are quite trival, but I don't see that the article does any harm. Alternatively, if it decided to redirect, I'd rather have a Thimble Theater article created first (Thimble Theater currently redirects to "Popeye". Thimble Theater starting the Oyl siblings was certainly one of the best comic strips of the 1920s from what I've seen of it. The TT article could deal with the dozen years before it was renamed "Popeye" after the late appearing character. Castor Oyl became a much less important character after the strip became "Popeye". Alternatively, this could be redirected to E.C. Segar, which could be expanded to list his character creations other than Popeye. However I think leaving the article is, at present, a simple and appropriate option. -- Infrogmation 18:44, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
There is no mention of Canniford Lotts under punny names, though it is clearly a pun of "can afford lots". 100.34.46.136 ( talk) 16:14, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
