Certainly "palace" is a valid translation of "Schloss", but so is "castle". Schloss Neuschwanstein and Schloss Kaltenberg, for instance, are castles but called "Schloss" as they fulfilled representative functions by nobility. Schloss Burg is a castle as seen on the picture.
